I know this is basic stupid stuff but I've committed a bit of a faux pas !

Last week I took off the earlier version (Lucas M45G) starter motor from a 2286 Diesel engine.

Things got a bit tight with time/light etc and in a hurry I only made a mental note of where I removed the earth strap from !

Well, mental I may be, but now I'm fitting a newer version (Lucas M46G) and two things have come to light.

1. I can't remember where on the starter I removed the earth strap and
2. The new starter motor solenoid is further up the body of the motor and therefor the earth strap doesn't reach anyway, so....

obviously I can move the chassis end of the earth strap to help it reach the motor but can somebody please remind me where I'm connecting on the starter motor? Is it on the terminal on the solenoid next to the positive feed? or is it anywhere on the body of the coil housing? or on the back or where?

Yes I feel stupid, but would rather show my stupidity on here and get a decent answer than sod up mi new starter motor !

Thanks muchly,

A newbie landy owner.

Hi normally the earth strap just goes to the bolt that holds the starter in the bellhousing, the posotive lead that comes from the battery goes onto the copper terminal on solenoid(bigger wire) and the smaller wire goes to the smaller connector this is a smaller wire which is the ignition feed to start the solenoid when ignition on position 3,hope this helps tiga.

HI

Thanks Tiga, I new the positive & smaller wire, but thanks for clearing up the negative one, now I know I can put it in a few choice places it should make life a little easier tomorrow. Can't wait to start mi landy up after almost two weeks of innactivity.

:)

the earth strap can go almost anywhere from the chassis to the engine block. just make sure the the mounting points are clean and shiney. (sp?).

although its always preferable to go from the battery to the starter if possible. direct route is always the best.
