Well as some of you have read, I made a bit of a booboo on my frist attempt at buying. So if anyone could help me I'd be very greatfull.

I'm looking for a defender 90 2.5tdi. I prefer ones that have had necessary kit already added such as bigger wheels, winch, hight etc. Manly as I'm no
Mechanic but can weld / do basic stuff with a will to learn.

I'll put some auction links in shortly. I could do with one within 50 miles of leeds/Bradford area. My top end budget is 4k but i don't want to be that high if possible. Seems to be a big range of prices for similar models out there.

Thanks in advance.

I was watching this but not 100% about the price

We've been here before.
Don't get swayed by a load of extras and end up with a real dog of a vehicle that turns into a real moneypit. Add extras as you go, none of these things are 'necessary' as a standard 90 will go places that will surprise and amaze you. Get the straighest, best vehicle you can afford and when you are happy with it spend your money on what you feel you need to add (if they were that 'necessary' how come they aren't fitted in the factory?).

i saw a series III on a gav chassis - 83 model ex military for 3k down the road. whats people think to that? looks tidy.

what do you guys think to this?

landrover defender 90 | eBay UK

That looks like a nice tidy example, but his photos don't really show the things that you need to see. Sure enough it looks great, but a close up of the bulkhead corners near to the hinges, the door bottoms, the chassis (especially the rear cross member & rear crossmember legs) would have been very useful. I always like to see a photo of the engine too. He says it is new, having only covered about 60,000 miles, so if it's got oil pouring out of it everywhere, I'd be inclined to think he's a fibber... or **** at topping his oil up. The steering box leak is nothing to really worry about and it does seem well equipped. I'd reckon no more than £4500 following a good look and a test drive.

Got any photos, or can you get any? I doubt it will be a genuine ex-military Series III, they're hard to come by, but perhaps one that has been painted and modified to look ex-military (like my 90 for example). What engine does it have? You don't really want to settle for anything less than a 200tdi these days as a regular driver, especially at the cost of fuel at the moment. A Series III would typically be a 2.25 diesel or a 2.25 / 2.5 petrol (I think). In some cases, people take the old 2.5 N/A (normally aspirated or "non-turbo") engines out of our old 90's when we upgrade to a 200 / 300 tdi and stick them into a series III and they do go well. At least you wont have to worry about chassis rot... for the time being anyway.

am just telling you its a ringer no need to get on your high horse

Could be a ringer - needs more checks

Even if straight, wouldn't advocate not having the 300 tdi on the reg doc/telling insurers - cracking excuse for them not to pay out!

If you're serious, HPI check, don't pay cash (HPI don't cover clones bought for cash), make sure original V5, check vin numbers (plate by brake servo and right chassis dumb iron - in front of drivers side front wheel by tow hook)

Interior looks tidy which could be a sign it's been loved, but really need to get underneath it

Notwithstanding, don't think I'd be looking to pay nearly £5k for a 1989 - £3,700 - £4k is more where my mind would be
