Help removing locking wheel nuts

Took my '96 XS in to have two new front tyres today and they asked me for the locking wheel nut key which wasn't in the truck when I bought it two weeks ago. Garage said they couldn't help so had to drive away without the new tyres. Anyone got a clue what I can do?

Get one off fleabay or beg one?

Use another garage for a start.

Then you can try telling us where you are in the country so that if someone with the knowhow or tools lives nearby they know they do and can then offer to help.

just buy a lock nut removal socket they work very well

I've had this problem before and my mechanic friend told me what they do in a garage.
Take an old socket thats a tiny bit bigger than the wheel nut and hammer it over the locking wheel nut then use the old socket hex hole to connect a ratchet handle/breaker bar to and take the wheel nuts off. You'll bugger your lock nuts but they're easily replaced.

Crap garage if they cant even do that! Forget the old socket trick cause ya'll need one for each wheel. lazer 4 piece removal set works well for me, got it off amaon for less than £20 i think. The smaller ones work well on rounded off bolts. Just remember to get some replacement nuts first

Im guessing with lock nuts this size, that regular lock nut removalmkits wont work (the sockets arent big enough)
The best way is to find out which lock nut key it is. There arent that many.
If not, get your (supposed!) mechanic to weld an m16 bolt with a short shank to each locking nut. Ensure that you wait a good twenty minutes for the weld to cool, than crack the welded on bolts with an impact gun. You'll need to replace the locking nuts with new, but at least your wheels wont be damaged.....

Where abouts are you? there's only a small number of different locking nuts, if your anywhere near BB12 (Burnley) you can try mine (there's a letter stamped on it) then buy one from local landrover dealer

Loosen the other nuts and drive it round a car park it should loosen the locking nut! gotta be worth a try as its free with no effort!!

if not as said above jut get a scoket and beat it over the locking nut, if you are local to me then run it round here and I should be able to remove them without much fuss

Thanks everyone. Believe it or not they are purely a tyre fitting company! Thinking about it, I think that the start of the problem is with the locking wheel nut cover as he couldn't even remove the cover. He was prising it with a screwdriver to no avail so I couldn't even get to the nut. I see there is a plastic cover remover you can but to get these off to expose the nut.

I am based near Stroud, Gloucestershire if that is near anyone as per some of the earlier posts?

Go to land rover

They have a master set in the workshop. Ask them to identify your nut, get them off for you, and then ask parts to order whichever one you need. They all have a letter for identification. They are a few quid.

20mm mulitpoint socket hammered onto locking nut

Breaker bar to undo nut

If socket slips hit harder with hammer..

Have have 3 discos with no locking wheelnut key.. and removed em all this way

Wrong, the largest socket on the Lazer 4 piece set is perfect. Did mine last week

Well, took to my mechanic today and he had no problem as they weren't even locking wheel nuts! Damn Tyre fitters don't have a clue and have just written to them complaining as they have damaged my alloys trying to prise the caps off with a sharp flat head screwdriver. Not very impressed!
