Hi just had the following done on my Freelander td4 2005 XEI
1 IRD Transfer box
2 recon Viscose coupling
3 new viscose bearings
4 new front connection on prop and gaiter
5 new rubbers on rear diff
6 all new bolts to connect above
with Labour and dreaded V.A.T The cost £1080 only to be told that on moving to test as wheel turned a loud clunking from front end !!
any one have ideas ? Garage gave 2 suggestions 1 recon gearbox and probably clutch 2 take of prop and use in 2 wheel drive

More information needed please. Why was the IRD changed? Was it new? Where was the recon VCU from? Are all the tyres correctly located and of the correct size, make and model? How was the propshaft CV joint replaced? Does the car roll freely if reversed slowly on full lock?

Hi IRD changed due to problem with VCU Failing and damaging ird. IRD purchased from breaker with 3 months warranty VCU was from reconditioner with 12 months warranty all tyres correct the propshaft CV joint replaced by mechanics in garage Cant answer about the last question as was not present at test ?

Remove prop and recheck......2nd hand ird possibly shot.
prop not on at moment garage will only remove IRD if I pay them £320.00 then they will send it back to the IRD supplier for there scrutiny and decision on replacement ! The vehicle will have to remain on there premises for up to 4 days minimum 14 days maximum !!!

Who sourced theIRD - you or the garage? If it was the garage it should be their responsibility as their may have chosen a poor supplier. If it was you, then they have a point.

If u paid with a CC or debit card you can claim the money back on account of faulty parts being supplied.... Phone ur CC company and explain. If it was a debit card it's called the chargeback scheme which has a time limit. I would also get in touch with citizens advice and trading standards.

So does it still clunk with the prop removed?

No it drives ok faultless gear changing ! Iwas informed that it would do this until prop connected !!
The problem I have is conflicting opinions !
1 if the gearbox changes ok then its ok !
2 the IRD might only malfunction when the prop connected !!
I am not a mechanic and that's why I seek help!!

If u can live with 2wd then leave it alone and save yourself the money. If it was me and because I tow a twin axle caravan with mine I would want the 4wd every day of the week!!

If it drives ok in 2wheel drive....this points to the ird being faulty, I very much doubt it would be a gearbox fault.
Give bell engineering a ring they should be able to confirm this for you.

I sent them a e-mail and was told to give ken a ring tomorrow !!! I need to have 4 wheel drive to cross farms for shooting !!

I agree with the above, if the garage supplied the part they are responsible to put it right. Regardless of what they say looks like they are looking for a meal ticket here in my opinion. See as I have said before its people like these that give garages a bad name. you could as sais claim the full cost back against the cc company and the garage would have to deal with them. the blood cheek of it.
