sorry I'm new to this so I might of already posted this thread, if I have u will have to excuse me!
I recently bought a freelander td4 auto 54 reg
I absolutly love it but I'm only getting 18mpg which is ****e!
The old disco I had did more mpg than that, so please if any of u guys out there has any suggestions then I wud love to hear them!
I don't want to take it to a garage coz being a woman I will look a right tit wen I don't know what they are going on about and I don't want to get ripped off!
Please can anyone help?

Hi bianca and welcome to the LandyZone.

Saw some of the replies you got yesterday - highly predictable. Every forum has its numpties - never mind, you gave as good as you got. ;)

There have been quite a few new owners with the same disappointed comments about their cars recently.

I have the same age TD4 auto as you and I can easily get double the mpg that you are getting - sometimes a lot more.

Here is a copy of what I replied to a poster yesterday:

Hi,

If you want more mpg (and less smoke on acceleration) - here are some easy cheap suggestions.

Stop using the supermarket diesel. Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate, Total Excellium or similar gives more mpg.
Clean and disconnect the EGR - or better still fit a by-pass. £45
Replace the pcv with the BMW up-dated part. £23
Use a bottle of Millers injector cleaner once only. £6
Add 250ml of Tesco or Halfords cheapest mineral base, low-ash 2-stroke oil per full tankful. £1

More mods / changes than these, eg a tuning box will cost a good bit more.

Lots of people have improved their mpg from what you quote to the mid 30s, with the above simple improvements.
Motorway running in top gear should give 40+

All depending on how heavy your right foot is of course.

You could also check the thread entitled 'How many miles per full tank' - several pages - but you'll realise you're not alone and the mpg can be improved quite a bit, by doing some simple checks / mods.

No need to be ripped off at all.

Also, when was your air-filter and fuel filter changed?

Have a read and get back if you need more explanation on anything.

Wow sorry guys for the spelling mistakes, must remember next time to check my dictionary!
Yes I have pointed out that I'm a woman, that was just a polite way of saying "please be gentle with me and don't blind me with science!!

thank you very much for your polite and pleasant reply, what you have said has been very helpful at least and can go to a garage and it will hopefully make me look like I know a bit what I'm talking about!! :). X
 
another thing to consider is tyres. they make a huge difference.
my run about is a little suzuki alto, fitted with normal road tyres at 32psi i get 64mpg. with fancy mud and snow tyres on it at 28psi i get 46mpg.

when i first fitted the m+s i thought the car was knackered. i now have two sets of wheels and only put the m+s set on if its mudding or snowing.

Absolutely right. Lots of folks swear by the A/T type tyres or the so-called all-season tyres. That's fine, but they don't suit me, or the places I go.

I've got 8 wheels - one set fitted with Summer tyres (ContiSport2s) and the M+S set I've on now for the Winter.

Change them when the clocks go back / forward.

Makes a big difference. ;)
 
hi welcome try to ignor the rustie owners now try and make sure your air filter and crank case filter are changed every 12000 miles when I first had my freelander td4 auto it was the same as yours and yet they assured me it had a full service, what rubbish the crank case filter which is on top of the engine next to the injectors was absolutly full and the air fillter was no better hope this helps
