Help I'm a woman and I don't want to get ripped off!!

Hello
I have a landrover freelander td4 auto 54 reg
I absolutely love it but I'm only getting 18 mpg!
I mostly do town driving but I'm pretty sure I should get more than that, the old disco I had before the freelander did more than that!!
Has any of you guys out there got any suggestions of to what it might be??
I just don't want to take it to a garage and ripped coz I'm a woman!
Any response and suggestion very welcome

Totally know where you are coming from. I understand a bit but don't have the "brawn" to do stuff myself. Anyhow 18mpg sounds not a lot, both my old 300tdi and my new td5 do more than that and I do short runs regular and often.

yeah it's really ****ing me off coz I down sized from a disco td5 because I thought it would cost me less in diesel !! don't get me wrong I do love the freelander but it's costing me another £10.00 in fecking diesel every week! Wish I could get it sorted, thanks for the reply by the way

turbo hoses a start, if you briefly floor it from idle has it lots of black smoke?
