I've just fitted a 200tdi into my S3, when I start it up, the revs go through the roof and won't settle, there is black smoke billowing out of the exhaust , I have to turn it of because it is revving so hard I worried its going to blow up, does anyone know what's causing this, I'm at my wits end, Daz

First thought is turbo!!! But don't run it again until you've investigated, check the vanes on the turbo make sure there's no play!!
Let me know the outcome of that first and we'll go from there bud

Regards

Nick

Hi Nick, the turbo isn't fitted, I was going to run it without, also the engine hadn't been run for at least 3 years, dunno if this is relative.. Daz

Diesels are fuel regulated only so if its getting fuel it'll run.

If its getting a lot of fuel it'll run fast!

If its burning its own oil it'll run away and then explode :)

BUT it clearly hasn't run away because you can turn it off so you must check your injector pump is functioning well and not over fueling.

I do not know how this would be done however!

Please be careful. My 300tdi ate its own oil and one of the con rods decided to experiment with moving sideways instead of vertically. Made a fist sized hole in the block.

I've heard that they suck the oil up through the turbo and then blow it into the head via the air intake, the engine then runs till it blows up, mine has no turbo so this shouldn't be the cause, I've got a feeling that the injection pump is stuck wide open. I have no idea how to fix this or even if it's possible to fix it without stripping the pump down and I'm afraid I'm not that mechanically minded...Daz

that would sound likely if obvious has been checked ,it would be a injection specialist job or another pump

Sounds like it is on the edge of a runaway. Could be the breathers putting crankcase gasses into the inlet tract. rising engine oil levels due to hg or such could be an issue.
If you are nt experienced with this I would do as james says and get someone in the know to look at it.

Hi Mark, the throttle cable is disconnected and I've already wound the adjuster all the way out. Looks like I need another pump
