Sorry to hear that and u have a speedy recovery

No probs and happy to help as part of the many other posts

Indeed doesn’t take long to remove the oil filter to see if there are any metal shards within it

At least then it gives u a general idea , hope u don’t mind me also saying plse ensure any garage that checks it doesn’t try and turn it over

Wishing u all the very best that it isn’t catastrophic
Hi thanks for the reply - just to confirm exactly what you mean by making sure they don’t try and turn it over? You mean that they don’t start the engine? Asking because some other advice is to listen to the engine to locate the noise. Apologies if I’m being stupid! Just thought it best to check

Do as suggested and remove and cut open the oil filter, if it has bits in then there is no need to go any further.

Hi, thanks for the reply, I’m in Hérault (34260) so actually pretty close to you! I’d really appreciate any advice because although I have a great local mechanic, he’s only got a small workshop and I was going to have to take it to JLR Beziers and pay through the nose (they have a reputation for ripping folks off too)!

Very grateful for anyone who knows of a decent alternative?

Cheers
I have just contacted my neighbour but only just remembered that he is on here anyway, don't know if he reads his notifications as his English isn't great.
Can't remember his handle, but he tried to help a bloke quite a bit to the north of us, even posted him his Nanocom for him to use, which to me seems very generous to risk! I don't know if his nanocom is unlocked for SDv6.
Hopefully he'll come on as i sent him a link to this thread.

Alain has just emailed me, he has some severe personal problems but he took the time to tell me this.
He just had an engine rebuilt by a guy who has appaz a very high reputation but 4000 kms later it has seized, also the garagey bloke said that he isn't touching 3 litre V6s any more. So sadly it doesn't look as if he knows anyone he can recommend at the moment.
Here is part of what he said, it makes grim reading.
"Mais, pour un rendez-vous pris en juin pour septembre, il a attaqué le véhicule en février. Après presque 7000€, 4000km plus tard , moteur à nouveau cassé. On ne sais pas encore pourquoi, mais presque plus d'huile moteur, perte de liquide de refroidissement. Je pense moteur serré, bloqué. Alors je peux difficilement le recommander. "

At least your moteur is not bloqué.

Very best of luck mate.

Fantastic, thank you very much indeed

Eeesh. €7k down the drain!

Quick update for the folks who were kind enough to lend me their advice a few weeks ago.

Just heard from JLR. Email said “we’ve noticed a knocking from the engine… and here’s a quote of €1300 to take the diff off and remove the sump to inspect it”

2 weeks it’s been with them 🤦🏻‍♂️

You took it in to the garage with a knocking noise and they've turned round and told you they've diagnosed a knocking noise!?
Maybe they should earn their money, get a stethoscope or and see if it's coming from the top/bottom/front/back

And so today I had the bad news: new engine required. €21k (= £17,600) labour and VAT all-in with a 2 yr warranty.

I don’t suppose there any use in keeping hold of any of the old parts?

What did they say was wrong? That's a stupid price for a brand new engine! You need to be talking to a specialist about a second hand engine. In my opinion, assuming they have diagnosed correctly

I haven’t got the details yet, but said it was damaged beyond repair.

I’m told that £12k for an engine (just the part) from JLR is the going rate, so unfortunately I’m not surprised.

I’m doing all this in my second language which makes it harder and my search for LR specialists near us has been fruitless. Another forum member knows a local who had the same issue, did his homework, went to a specialist and had it fail after 7k. Back to square one.

Not sure what other options I have
