I am stranded in Gatehouse of Fleet at the moment after a long drive I stopped the landy and it wouldn't crank again. The 60 amp fuse in the engine compartment had blown. And as soon as I put a replacement in that blew. Waiting for an auto electrician to come tomorrow to have a look. Anyone got any ideas what it might be. Checked what earths I can and no wires appear to be damaged.
Recovery turned out but couldn't find anything, didn't look too hard though.
I did get a whiff of electrical burning just before I switched off.
Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

Cheers
Chris

Does the fuse blow at key position 2 (glow plugs on) or at position3 (the point when the starter engages) ?

What Defender have you got and where about's was the smell coming from? I'd be looking at the wires coming from the back of the alternator and from the starter motor and also where the main live runs through the box under the passenger seat if it were mine. It must be one of the fatter cables if it blows the main fuse

Check your ignition wiring,P1 P2 P3 glow plugs, and starter wiring also good place to start also check for chaffed wiring around bell housing and bulk head ...

Give a good hard look at the harness that runs from the rear of the engine over the bell housing + N/S chassis member and goes to the ECU under the front middle seat... it is usually badly secured and can chaff ...

It's a 300tdi
The smell was just a feint one before switching off, it's gone now.

Update,
After getting it trailered back home got a friendly auto leccy to have a look.
Much melted insulation stripping later and full dash removal traced the short back to behind the heater box, two wires had shorted together and caused major damage to the loom further up.
It's now back up and running and I have the satisfaction of knowing that it's not going to burst into flames any time soon. Looking at the damage of the wires that were replaced looks like that could have been a possibility.
Thanks for your ideas and offers of help.
