The turbo has blown on my partners freelander TD4 (2003). By the time she stopped she had gone maybe a hundred yards or so. The RAC man tried to start it but it wouldn't turn over so he had it recovered to a garage.
2 days later the garage said they had put a spanner on the big pully to free the engine (which now runs) and that the turbo had 'gone' and they would get a price for a replacement. They later rang back and said that they would not replace the turbo as they couldn't warrant the work due to the possibility of other damage.
A mechanic friend has had a quick look and said that there is backpressure on the engine evident when the oil filler cap is removed with the engine running although there is no oil coming from the dipstick tube on tickover. He also agreed that the turbo has 'gone' and that the backpressure was probably a sign of other damage.
The car has been regularly main dealer serviced.
Please has anyone any ideas as to the probable cause of the backpressure? We don't want to go to the expense of a turbo if there is serious other damage.
Any help would be much appreciated.
