Hi - help for a "new member" please.

I purchased a 1995 (M Reg) Diesel Discovey in October 09 from an aquantaince. He advised that the battery would probably not last the winter.

Over the weekend 5/6 November the central locking stopped working and on Monday the 7th the engine just turned over and wouldn't fire.

On Wednesday I bought and fitted a new battery. Central locking still doesn't work and nothing on the turn of the ignition key.

The horn and headlights work, plus courtesy light.

I took the battery back on Friday 11th and was advised that it was fully charged etc.

This is my first diesel and youngest car that I've owned (Modern Technology!)

Could somebody point me in the right direction please?

Thanks in anticipation.

Sounds more like an alarm spider fault to me. Whats the immobiliser led doing while all this is happening?

Assuming you've already checked all the fuses and relays, the earth points would be the next place I'd look. A search around here will find you a copy of the RAVE manual to download which will have a section on earth points listing locations with pics to help find them, and then check they're all clean, dry and making good contact. Good luck.

Thanks very much for this response last night. I've checked central locking system and engine management fuses by drivers right knee (ok) but not all others?
Have no knowledge of relays - could you say please which ones to try and find?
We will try and download your RAVE manual - again thanks.

Before you do anything else you really need to check the connections on either end of the two engine earth straps. Given the age of your car they will be corroded and making poor electrical contact.
While you are at it also check the main body earth connection behind the battery.
Undo each connection in turn, clean contact surfaces to bright metal with file, emery etc, coat surfaces with vaseline and re-assemble.

Thanks, nicedayforit.

Appreciate the response. Will have a go during the next couple of days.

Check the feed to the starter motor solenoid (the small wire on the starter) when the key is turned to the 'crank' position. Does it turn from earth to live? If it does then try giving the wire a wiggle or cleaning the contact and then see if it starts. If it doesn't turn live, check the feed to the fuel stop solenoid on the back of the pump. If this isn't live either, my money is on the alarm spider being buggered. You can get a bypass wire for it from the main dealers for about £5.
