Im new to this 4wd defender
Anyway could someone please tell me how to operate the 4wd on my defender?
What do I have to do to make it work????
All I know is the little nob says (N...L...H) Im driving normally when its in (N) I can move it to the (L) position but cant move it into (H) position
Please help. I know I sound daft but ive no idea how to operate.
thanks

Your Deepender is permanent 4WD.
The Transfer box is controlled by the small lever, which has 3 positions.
H is high ratio, for normal driving.
N, the centre position, is Neutral and your Landy won't move, even it's in gear in the main gearbox.
L is low ratio, for off-roading or heavy towing.

The small lever can also be pushed to the left to engage the centre Diff-Lock (the orange warning light should come on when it's engaged). Diff-Lock should only be used when on a slippery surface and traction is likely to be lost - never on tarmac.

Hello Kev as Tweets and Trewy ses yer Landy is in permanent 4WD.

As Trewy pointed out the little lever is for selecting diff lock this can be done on the move off road at any time yer likely to need extra grip you don't need it on all the time unless Very muddy/slippery.
If you have left it on too long when you flick it off yer orange light wont go out cos you have transmission wind up, which can be over come by reversing for a bit.
But that is why you shouldn't use it on tarmac cos if you over wind it yer gonna break somthin spensive.
Dont change form high to low range without coming to a complete standstill.
and if you need to change from low to high on the move say for towing somethin very heavy then you have to let the revs drop right off before you change up. Otherwise come to a complete stop to change to high range too.

Lastly try not to rev too hard in low range have a practice on a fairly tame off road course you'll be amazed what yer Landy can do just left at tick over in low range. Successful orf roadin requires torque, momentum and technique and any vehicle is only as good as its driver with the possible exception of the Freelander :D :D

when you want out of diff lock you need to either put 1 wheel against a curb and let the cluch snatch or make 1 wheel spin a bit ie 1 wheel on a grass verge (both while holding the lever hard over to the right )

Could be a bit of a problem finding a curb in the middle of a field:confused: You should never engage or disengage diff lock when the wheels are spinning you will break it.

If yer wheels are spinnin then you should have already put it in diff lock so you read the conditions wrong, and if yer in diff lock and yer wheels are spinnin then you really don't want to disengage it any way :D

It seems to go forward for (L)
Middle for (N) and its driving in that
And it dont seem to go back for (H)

is there a problem then

Thanks for helping ,

When its in (L) it drives very slowly, but I cant get it into (H) position ??
When its in (N) in the middle you can move the lever quite freely from side to side but it drives ok still(normal I Think)

Moving the lever from side to side only engages/disengages diff lock.

As for it driving in the N position it's hard to say without seeing what its doing/not doing.
There should be a point between the two positions where neutral is selected and you get no drive.
By the sounds of it the reason you can't get H is cos at the N position yer already in it.

As to why theres only the two positions all I can say is are you sure that where you think its in the N position it isn't actually the proper H position??

Yes Sorry, I feel really stupid now, as your right.
When I thought it was in the (N position it was in the (H) position.
Because I havnt had one before it was difficult for me to tell where it was .
Gonna have to read up about these defenders
I thought there was something wrong with it (But NO)

sorry for the mess about

No worries Kev glad all is well. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner I had to go out.

If it makes you feel any better the first time I went off road I got stuck on a simple axle twister cos I'd not flicked the diff lock on :D :D :D

Yer jokin Right

doubt it:eek::eek::eek::rolleyes:

Lets try to help him , after a long study of a) the manual , b) the f**king knob , c) the little sticker inside the sunblind wich explains to do what at wich speeds , d) use the search function of this here forum i would say it could be : move the little lever to the LEFT , but as an honest advise , after seeing how quick you pick things up , don't ever use it or put yourself in a situation where you need it like off-road , a dirtroad or whatever:rolleyes:;):D:D

Poor bloke, at least he is having a go! It's a bit like talking computer jargon to people that don't have a clue, doesn't matter if you told them 3 times and they nodded to say they understood and have it in big letters on a laminated peice of paper, it still goes in one ear and out the other!
