Hi guys and gals,

I have just become the proud owner of a 300tdi Disco, and I love it, apart from the fact I now think i have been swindled as to the condition of the vehicle, but oh well. its only welding and i need to learn how to anyway lol.

But i am having an issue, and you may be able to shine some light on it for me. The high/low box is all the way over to the passenger side, which i believe is when the diff is locked?? and i have an orange light on dash with a chassis and tyres. when i push the high/low to the drivers side, the light goes off. but it will not go into any gear. It sounds like the teeth of the cogs are JUST touching and not near enough to engage properly. am i right in thinking that this is not good? also, been told that i can go under the car and disengage the clip which enable's the diff lock, and can then run with it in the diff position?????

Hope i have not confused you too much already. also. I need to take the black plastic (the bit the stereo and heater controls are so i can wire in my Bluetooth and usb linked car stereo, as i can not get the wire to reach it as it is, its a bit packed behind there. how do i take this off to gain access?

both rear electric windows don't work, and the fuse diagram is confusing, any help where i should be looking?

I think that's it for the moment, but i am sure i will have more question. any help you can give will be appreciated :)

Re the small gear lever, it has as you know two functions: 1 is to select hi or low ratio gears and the other independant feature is the selection of the Centre Diff Lock.

Once you have moved the lever to the right - out of CDL - you can select hi or low gears by moving the lever forward or back, with the clutch selected of course, then using the main gearbox lever select the gear you want.

Hope that helps

Dave

Thanks for that, but when i do that. it sounds like the gears are not engaging when i try to pull away, it does it in all gears including reverse. just sounds like to gears just touching but not engaging :(

So it sounds like the T-box gears are not 'meshing' - to help them put the main gearbox in 1st gear, apply light pressure rearwards on the smaller lever and - usually - it will mesh when you gently lift the clutch and you should be alright.

Good luck

Dave

Hi dave, I have alrady tried that. it does not seem to want to "mesh" still. tried with reverse as well, and in low range. sadly nothing. but disco works fine when diff locked in both low and high. is there a way to manually disconnect the diff lock from underneath? At least then i will still be able to drive it.

pull lever to right ,run engine in gear and get some one to see which prop is spinning ,which ever will show axle with issue

That suggests that perhaps other things are at work here. The CDL locks both front and rear propshafts and is often used to maintain drive if there is a problem in one or other axles.

The first thing to check is: are both propshafts correctly in place?

Dave

Yes, there are 2 propshafts attached. I was under there earlier trying to work out what's gone wrong.

OK, just done this, started engine, put in gear with diff lock off and then had a look underneath. the front prop is spinning, but the rear is stationary.

Just spoken to someone i know who knows the "arse" that sold it to me, and he seems to remember than he had a problem with front passenger UV/CV joint. does not know if he fixed it or not. but this may have some bearing on the problem.
