Hi

Been having a few problems with the Disco 2 where in the mornings it would struggle to start. The only way to get it going would be to let the fuel pump whine away for ages at which point it would start no issue and drive fine. Has got progressively worse. Mechanic fitted a new fuel return valve located in the fuel filter in the rear wheel arch. This actually made the problem worse as the engine started stalling whilst driving along. It would go dead and then need loads of pump priming before it would start again.

Mechanic suggested changing the sender unit as air must be getting into the system. Changed that yesterday and all seemed okay. Ran well last night and was running great this morning. Stopped at some traffic lights and the revs started to waiver (auto box). It then cut out and wouldn't start. After five minutes of pump priming it started again. Now that it is running I can hear the pump whining away constantly.

Other things to note:
- Oil level is full and mechanic things it is possible there is diesel getting into the oils.
- been suffering from what we think is overboost (v. intermittent) where on full throttle it gets to 3000+RPM and power cuts in and out and wont change gear

Mechanic has suggests the injector seals need to be looked at next and the injector loom. Whole kit off ebay is £50.

Are we going down the right route as I am a bit miffed I just bought a whole new sender unit (£300 fitted) without solving the actual issue.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Probably. He was just sure that given he had changed the fuel return valve it was going to be air getting into the sender unit.

It looks like there is definitely diesel in the oil. Level is just over full and it smells a little of diesel. Does this then point firmly to gasket and injector seals?
