Hey all I’m a new owner of a landrover freelander sport auto td4. Drives superb apart from reverse it tries then just revs like it’s in neutral. Tested all solenoids seem ok but the 2-4 brake duty solenoid is reading 3.6 sometimes my meter says 3.3 is this to high as I was told 2.6-3.2 is the limits and would this cause no reverse thanks in advance

Hi thanks for the reply. I haven’t done any oil change with the box it’s been fine until it was rolling slightly and put in reverse oops since then no reverse iv read about the inhibitor but surely it would of been fine afterwards. I haven’t a clue. iv done everything on cars except welding and auto box’s so I bought an auto Landy lol but I do love it

I expect the reverse brake band has worn out. It's actually a bit of a week point on the Jatco box. It doesn't like reverse being selected if the vehicle is moving forward, or the engine is revved above idle.

Do you mean revved above idle while it’s in gear ? Sorry if I’m not getting last part clear

The reverse brake band can be damaged if the vehicle is moving forward while reverse is selected. Or if the engine is revved while selecting reverse.
The reverse brake band isn't a very good design and is a weak point on these boxes.

Ahh thank you for that now I’ll put it down to that as it was rolling as it went in reverse and since then I did rev it and put it in reverse to see if it would kick it in to working but it didn’t obviously my first experience with auto. thank you for the help guys if any one has a guide or anything to help me along the way. I’m going to take the box off.I’m unsure if I will try changing the brake band or put on a different box. I know these boxes need to be warm to fill but what if it’s completely empty after fitting new box. I don’t want to run a box with no oil and kill it. Sorry to be so dumb with this as I say I’m used to fixing manual cars so I do apologise. Will need all the help and guidance I can get with this box change and will be very grateful for any help from you experienced members regards dave

It's worth checking the reverse solenoid valve resistance, Hippo has a quide on here which tells you all that information.

You fill the box before running it, but the box must be between 35-45°C to check the fluid level. Don't run the box without fluid or you'll trash it.
This is the box PDF file which should help out.

When selecting reverse with the gear lever... Does it change from P to R ont dash? Do the led's next to the gear lever report the correct current position of the lever?

Is that the low clutch solenoid I check all of the solenoids only one that was out of range was 2-4 brake duty solenoid it’s rage say 2.6-3.2 mine was at 3.3 every solenoid was in range as part from this one

It shows on dash as r and the light is in correct position when in reverse when you put it in you get the slightest jolt very faint and the revs drop sometime you put you foot down after putting in reverse revs don’t respond straight away there’s like a slight pause then free revs other times it just free revs straight away like it’s in neutral and when it does the pause you get a creek from underneath and the slightest move backwards like say few mm but that’s as good as it gets for reverse

Also I believe the solenoid that’s out of range is used for gears reverse 2 and 4th from what I read but forward drive is smooth and pulls well in every gear without fault

That sounds like the brake band is slipping. It's relatively easy to replace, once the box is out and the casing split.

You might as well change all the clutch plates while it's in bits.

True I don’t want to be pulling it off again thanks for all the help I’ll keep you posted How it goes.
