So both heads are off now and I'm struggling to find the problem.

Thankfully I think I can discount a slipped liner, but I can't find any problems on the head gaskets.

Cyliner #1 on the left bank appeard to have water in it.

I can only think of a warped head which I'll have looked at this week.

Pic's below, if you spot anything let me know.

Heads confirmed as being straight, no liner slippage and upon closer inspection damage can clearly be seen to the head gasket.

Engine had a slight ticking noise caused by a worn push rod, maybe in turn caused by a worn cam.....given the prices of parts from Island 4x4 it might as well go back together with new cam, followers, rods and rockers.

Should be sweet as a nut.

a slipped liner can only occur with badly fitted liners or when crack in aliminum bore has opened up enough to release grip on liner ,cracked block (bore behind liner ) dosent show on inspection as only leaks when engine warm and gasses can leak down the side of liner, you look for a clean fire ring mark round each bore on block face and head this shows gasket was sealing ,staining indicates gasses passing

fingers crossed its not the block that cracked behind a liner then

the only wat to tell is get the block tested gasket looks ok to me you say heads are ok only thing left is the block cracked inside letting gases escape into the water, then you get overheating talk to joe at emmots of clone if you need his number just ask see what he has to say goodluck. your not the first or going to be the last this happens to most of us have been where you are now..

yeah, had a chat with Joe....really nice chap but not the bearer of good news.

He's certain, after asking a few specific questions, that it is indeed a cracked block.

I'll need to liberate £500 to get one.......no huge issue as I got the car for good money and I'll know it's right once it's done.
