Just bought ourselves an FL1, 1.8 on a whim :) Had a look around the FL forum before registering and hoping i haven't bought myself a big box of trouble!

It seems to have been meticulously looked after and serviced since it was put on the road back in '98, stayed in the same household since about 3000miles (just turned 108k) Came with a nice ring binder full of polypockets filled with every MOT, tax disc and receipt since new, service book with every bit of work no matter how small logged, a haynes manual and free tank of fuel :)

MOT due in May so keeping fingers crossed til then but given the price and condition had to take the gamble.

Obligatory pic, although i'm sure you all know what they look like :D

Off for some more reading now....

Thanks!:D

It went at 81k, no evidence of trouble since. Maybe it'll go again, maybe it wont...meh!

erm the thicker the pile of receipts the more times it's broken down..

Nothing major - just service items mainly. As i said above HG went at 81K, window regs - odds and sods. Jeez you're a bunch of doommongers on this site aren't you! :D

It's a petrol Gaylander :D it's hard to be optomistic.

Yes it's a bit gay but it doesn't look too scruffy sitting in the street and the missus likes it! I do most of my travelling on 2 wheels these days anyway :)

What are the welding statistics like on "proper landrovers" then? My dad had a 110 station wagon - chassis dissolved, He had a series 1 90 which was passed onto me breifly before chassis and springs turned to dust, my mate also has a 3.5 110 - he could have probably bought a brand LR with all the bells and whistles on given what he has shelled out since he took ownership about 5 years ago - and it is still not 100%!

Ok - i always realised that these things were probably looked down upon amongst the LR community but really, as a welcome to a forum this is worse than when i joined a biker forum whilst still learning on a Chinese 125!!! :(

Off for a sulk now...

in the same boat as you darth, 1998 f l petrol 3 door, head already done, goes ok, looks good, just needs some mods!!
if it doesnt go wrong what will we have to fix!!!!!!!!!

Welcome Darth. Sorry we seem doom merchants regarding the 1.8 and 2.5L V6 Freelanders but there is little doubt they are a bag of trouble. Having said that there are those on here who love them, and whatever, there is always some one about who can advise if you do have problems.

Might be useful to have a look at the info you have on the HG replacement to determine what they actually did. There is a gasket upgrade that is recomended and a replacement for the location dowel pins. If these have been fitted you have a better chance. Next it is worth doing a search for the cooling system modifications, as it the poorly designed cooling system that lets these engines down.

Good luck.

:welcome:
hope yu got a thick skin and thicker pockets :d
Dont worry - there are good ones about - theres a few on here that are happy with their hippoos.

Is that Ok,nurse? Can I go to bed now?

Well thanks for all the replies so far - yes i have fairly thick skin and a comprehensive toolkit. Fingers crossed i wont need to test either too regularly! :)
