Hello and Happy New Year, this is my first post. I'm looking for my first Defender (which will end up as close to the AA crew cab 110s I used to see) - the £7000 budget I had originally earmarked is now about £2-3000 following home improvements undertaken by her during a prolonged absence at sea. I'm hopefully going to end up with a taxed and MOT'd roller which I can modify to my spec in small steps leaving it available most of the time for the launching and recovery of a RIB off various slipways near my house in Cornwall. I've just had a surreal episode with one of the bigger used dealers in Somerset - after viewing one of their bargain basement Defenders (their words, fair cop I suppose) I asked to look at the docs and have a test drive. They did not like this at all and I got a clear sense that I was wasting their time. Was I being cheeky? Secondly, the day I was supposed to collect said Defender I was told it was written off in a crash on its way to the MOT test centre. If so, I'm glad the driver was ok but I'm not sure about the whole thing. And I'm waiting to get the cash deposit back. Have I been had for a sucker or does this sound, well, above board?

you need to start with a decent county station wagon base vehicle. If you are towing a RIB and launching with it a 200TDI or 300TDI diesel will have more torque and better swimming capabilities than a v8 petrol. On the downside they are much more expensive and you may struggle to find one within your budget.

Hi Ratty, nice to e-meet or whatever the cyberspace term is! On reflection you're right and I'm going to have to spend more, budget is now going to be about 5 grand max. Cheers for the heads up about the V8 petrol, I've seen several within the price range and I've began to wonder. How do I go about panelling in the rear side windows to turn it into a commercial - style Defender?

If you look at my profile piccy you will see that my commercial station wagon has the panels you descibe. They don't come up very often on ebay and the like and are stupid money new. The cheapest option would be to get the solid rear panels from a 88" landrover (NOT a 90 cos they are too long) to replace the whole rear sections with.

Keep your eyes on ebay cos you can occassionally get a bargain ex utilities one on there ready built for what you want. Factor in for having at least £500 worth of problems andyou wont go far wrong.

There are some the same age as mine (1999 TD5) going on ebay for around £10k I paid £3.5k on ebay. Mine turned out to have the headgasket gone. Even after spending £500 doing that I still rekon I got a bargain.

Cheers Ratty, I'll start looking for some 88 panels. I've seen a nice 110 for sale on this site as a matter of fact so I'm happy. The garage I originally tried to deal with phoned up to try to force feed me a TD5 Hardtop, apparently it'll be better for me than a TDI CSW...

For acceleration and chipping potential a TD5 is better. For submerging in water I would go with a TDI. I only ended up with my TD5 cos it was too cheap to say no. I was looking for a replacement 300TDI.

The TD5 has a throttle potentiometer (electronic throttle control) and an ECU under the drivers seat. Both are vulnerable to water attack. The 300TDI has a small ECU for the EGR valve but once the valve has been removed (a highly recommended mod) you can take this out. A set of extended axle breathers, a snorkel and some wading plugs and you can take a 300TDI as deep as you want under water without fear of killing it.

Hi everyone, sorry for the absence but had big things going on at work. Many thanks for all your advice, I used it and got a lovely machine off here - 110 CSW 300 TDI (Ex V8) with a winch and other bits. Loving it. We had some practice towing the trailer around and I caught one of the guys turning the wheels on the spot. After administering the punishment beating, I saw a pool of oily fluid on the ground adjacent. Steering fluid levels have been more or less steady since then. Common problem or last rites for the steering system?

Cheers Ratty, will do. Is there a good breaker's yard with some write off Landys in Cornwall? I have a growing shopping list of bits to replace. Also found out the seatbelt retaining bolts are just blobs of rust - once I've got rid of them, will try stainless replacements. I took the Landy wading when we launched the RIB for the first time at Falmouth last weekend. It was happy, but spent half an hour jetting it down afterwards.
