We are new owners of a 2001 Freelander ES and are replacing things as and when. My question is: there is a small box on the front diff which allows the four wheels to work independently OR go the same way - what is it called or are we having our legs pulled?

Hello, ask this in the freelander section you will get more relevant people seeing it.
Also try searching 'freelander 1 drivetrain' on google or whatnot ;)

And as this is introduce yourself, pics of your pride and joy will go down well :)

hi and welcome !
Good advice from 1988smithy
I don't know anything about freelanders im afraid..still learning the basics , but the info will be here and lots of clever people to!!! but the thing that makes all my wheels go the same way at the same time is called " good luck"
As if you want to lock the difs, you have to say a little pray , cross your fingers and after some crunching and clunking and then a geet big "Bang" your climbing out of that ditch and back on your way to Asda !!!
