Hi all recently made the change from 2 wheels to 4 and I figured if I am having 4 wheels they may as well be four wheel drive. I did a lot of looking around different motors but set my mind and heart on a discovery.
Well I got one which was moderate condition with 216000 on the clock.
1994 on M plate 300 tdi.

I have parts ordered for a service which I will be doing next week while having a week off work.

I noticed some black smoke from exhaust and guessed it may be egr removal time. So I bought a removal kit new pipe and blanking gasket. Did that no probs.
My question is..... my kit came with a rubber plug to "blank actuator"
my problem is trhat someone has already removed the electrical connection off the egr valve and I can not see the (breather?)pipe anywhere where would it actually go to?

Many thanks in advance I did try the search and found loads of posts relating to egr removal but not one that mentions missing pipe lol.

Will be on here quite regular me thinks :)

Stuart.

If you look in front of the air filter you will see air pipes going into a unit fastened to the inner wing, under the wheel chock ( if you still have yours.)
The air pipe going to the EGR is the middle one of the three, mine has blue tape on the end and a blue ring at the base of the inlet pipe. This is the pipe or inlet you need to block off.
How moderate is " moderate " condition?
Have you got a service history or proof of when the cam belt was done? If not, get it changed soon. At 216000 miles, it will be needing (at least) its 4th belt
Allan

Ok will check in daylight tomorrow.
Moderate as in plenty of service history
Lots of little niggles
Front passenger electric window not working.....fixed
Couple of rust holes in side roof windows.....fixed
Didnt like just the low level/bumper side lights.....modded :)
Rear wiper not working.....fixed
Need to check turbo as does not whistle as I was expecting it to????

Love getting my hands dirty and reasonable bodger lol

Turbo not spooling could be as simple as a blocked air filter. Mine was totally blocked, once changed, the turbo sang. I noticed a big difference when I removed the CAT too, that allowed the turbo to spool up far more easily. You can get a decat pipe from here, doesn't take long to do: Mild Steel DeCat Pipe - 300TDI Def and Disco without flexi

HTH,
Lew

De EGRd and De catted my 300tdi
My advice is go for the Flexi version on the pipe-a bit more expensive but much easier to fit plus it cuts down on vibration a bit too:D

I'm pretty sure mine doesn't have a cat the exhaust doesn't have a bulge in.
As for the air filter will be rectifying as soon as filter kit gets here.
Also going to clean all the gunge that the egr system left me with damn that stuff is sticky.

How difficult is it to check if turbo is spinning up or not?
Apart from noise while driving?

Whoops time for work lol see you all later :)

I haven't had any more vibration than before, and providing you jack the front end up properly, it's easy to fit. I'd rather fiddle a bit than spend an extra £30! That vibration business is like dual mass flywheels, trying to improve something that needs no improving. We're driving old landy's not BMWs!

As for the turbo spooling up, you could fit a boost pressure gauge to see if the turbo is spooling correctly. There was a thread on here a couple of days ago, chap had the same problem.

while your on with the service make sure you clean the sedimentor (filter under the o/s rear wheel arch) you can take it off with an 11mm (i think) spanner from the top. Dont try to undo the plug underneath as they have a habit of breaking but after 200000+ miles there will probably be a fair amount of crap in there.

PS-worth getting the seals for the sedimenter as well just in case they are shot like mine were:eek:

Update !
Everything was going fine until 2 weeks ago
now seem to have overfuelling issue
lots of black smoke
injector problems?
i took the intercooler off this morning but all seems clean and clear likewise the pipes and manifold
slightly mucky so cleaned anyway but no difference.
I await any and all help much thanks :)

No tweaks as far as I know if you mean pump adjustment e.t.c
Can't say I have noticed any extra noises.
First noticed fuel consumption was getting approx 120 miles out of £20
now getting between 80-90.....

black smoke = unburnt diesel
I'd check your air filter and work forwards from there, there will be something stopping your engine breathing, it's probably something stupid like a collapsed turbo hose which has taken your recent fettling badly and give up the ghost; replace all the turbo hoses with silicone ones while your at it, it's like l'oreal - your worth it.

black smoke = unburnt diesel
.
under impression black smoke = too much diesel / not enough air.
white smoke would be unburnt diesel. (not to be confused with steam)

check hoses as advised. (will cause lack of air)
was going down burnt injector tip route, would cause knocking noise, or at least a roucus run noise.
cambelt timing can cause raucus noise too, but was workin on this aint bin meddled with.
is the performance the same?

As previously said had intercooler off today to clean also checked hoses and manifold.
I'm thinking it's more likely injectors now
as for cambelt don't know when it was last changed.
Thanks for the help :)
