My TD4 takes about 10 minutes of running before I can get the heater working well enough to clear the ice off the windscreen. It was pretty bad tonight drivers side window wouldn't lower frozen solid.
Toying with the idea of getting a 12v heater just to clear the windscreen a bit quicker.
Has anybody tried these? And any recommendations?
cheers all
Dave

They just give off warm air not hot so I doubt that they would be any good for
de-icing, might be ok for helping to de-mist at best.

12v hair dryers have just been discussed but even then at 168 Watts they will be pretty poor too...but never had one !

I thought about running a mains one from a good inverter but I was told that the inverter would have to be connected directly to the battery (not cig socket) so this would be a pratt about and not sure it would be safe on a freezing cold morning.

I brought my wife one from Maplins, and although they are not fast and do not get hot it helps, and she said she would not be with out it, so do not poo poo them i did think of making a better eliment for it so it gets hoter.

You wouldn't get the current needed to run a mains hair drier using an inverter from the lighter socket. Eg a 1000 watt hair drier will need still need 1000 watts regardless of the supply voltage, as at a lower voltage the current increases!!

I know thats what I said-direct from battery not cig lighter socket ;)

the black box in the passenger footwell with all the heater **** in has started to whistle like theres sand whizzing round the system when i put the air circulation on wondering if anyone else had had this problem? also can you replace the heater matrix with a ford one? just looking for a bit more heat to clear the wondscreen

You can remove the 4 inch diameter pipe in the passenger footway to see the fan blade. It's possible to get water in here which hits the fan when going round corners (I did) and leaves too. Matrix should give enough heat if your coolant supply is ok.

cheers for that pal! reckon youve hit the nail on the head there, been taking a crappy back road to work for two weeks (which is paractically off road) because of road works so like you say it will have picked up some leaves or something somehow. ill open it up nd sort it tomorow.
