Heater fan keeps blowing the fuse!

bummer!!!

we finally get some snow, went out, taxed the 90, took it for a drive and the fan didnt work...

got back home, blown fuse!

replaced the fuse to check what was happening, there's 3 fan speeds, 3 clicks...

it doesnt work on any of the speeds, but the fuse only blows when i select the last, and fastest speed...

took the clocks out and checked the connections behind the fan speed lever, all seems fine, sprayed some WD40 and tried to clean as best as i could, but still blows the fuse when i select the fastest speed (3rd click down)
the fuse doest blow on any of the other clicks, but the fan doesnt work either...

any sugestions?

pour some boiling water down the heater air intake then open the "fanny" gland on the bottom of the fan housing probably full of **** and ice stopping the fan turning
 
bollox.. didnt work.

again the same, push the lever down, 1st click nothing, 2nd click nothing...3rd click blown fuse!

should be the first click is the air ram its only 2 stage fan looks like you got a earth short somewhere
how long did you give it after the hot water ? try hot water with a load of salt in it that will stop it refreezing
 
sounds like fan seized I had to bypass the wiring on mine as nothing worked when I got it.
run it thru a relay. and took the feed off another wire I had to fit direct from battery to feed the ignition switch when that fooked up :doh:

But when the headlamps are on I can't run fan on high speed cos it blows the 30amp inline fuse I fitted to the original wire :mad:

get doris's hair drier down it for 30 minutes - nicen gentle does it
 
tried the hot water...3 times now, didnt work...

took the lever switch on the left had side of the clocks and gave it a clean, put back in.....same thing happens

nothing on the 1st or 2nd click, get to the 3rd click and there goes the fuse!

cant even understand why this would be happening as nothing has changed since last time I used it, only thing was I fitted a CB, but the power for the CB runs off the feed that goes to the radio, so havent even touched the fuse box when i did that.....
 
i reckon its coz yu fan is sorted to earth - on 1 & 2 the current will be going thru the resistor pack, which will limit current draw - on 3 - no resistor - so shorted to earth - bang!!

left it for a while there but the fuse went bang again!
and the hair dryer went bang too lol
 
ok, just went outside again, its fokin freezing and im working from home today, so cant really be spending loads of time working on this now....

this time i shined a torch down the heater intake and there's water where I have marked on the pic...
i've put my hand in and the blades turn, so its not seized solid, but cant find a drain plug to get rid of the water?

Landrover in their wisdom didnt put a drain hole in there. My fan done the same about 2 years ago, you could spin the blades but as you say it would blow the fuse.
Solution is replace the fan unit wiv a new one/ secondhand and drill a hole in the bottom of the cowling to allow the water out :D
 
replace it? hooo ffs! nothing is easy!

how easy is to take the heater off? just the right time of year for this to happen!

Is there a way I can test the blower when it's out?
I ws thinking of taking it out to drain the water but can I test it out?is it just to wires on it?
