Have a 04 SE, this morning the heated windscreen was switched on and ran fine, some of the lines dont work but it clears the screen in a few minutes.

The car had steamed over by 5pm, started the car and pressed the button, but the screen never came on. The light for it came on though.

Had a look when i got home from work, the fuses are fine, the car when idling and you click the button, flutters its revs as the load increases and the interior light dims for a split second. But there is no life to the screen.

Had the first frost of winter this morning and im not wanting to go long without it working. Is there any other things i should check on or is it a new screen time?

Thats what im thinking as its been getting slower to clear the steaming up and there were a few areas of dead elements on the screen, mostly in my line of sight.

Oh and ive now discovered my air con doesnt work dispite it being regassed and leak tested 18months ago. Joy

The screen has LH and RH elements - have both halves failed simultaneously??

I would first suspect the relay. Check handbook time I think.

I needed a new screen last year horrendously expensive!

By good luck not long after the screen failed a stone was thrown up by the vehicle in front and cracked it, so fortunately for me the Insurance Co paid for most of it.

Yes, both sides have failed. Although the right side was always slower to clear compaired to the left side, which was a bit irratating.

I'll check the relay tomorrow in the daylight, are they prone to going?

If the worst comes, my insurance excess is £70 for a new windscreen.

I had only the LH side go - so I put up with it for a while.

Yes the relays can go any time.

I test mine by simply swapping for the one next to it and seeing if the change makes any difference.

Sounds like you need a new screen though if some of the element lines are out.

Forgive my stupidity, ive worked a 12 hour shift and very tired.

The relays and fuses are two different things, and possibly in different areas?

I'll check them out but i want to get it working before i get a new screen, or knowing my car and it's undying love of being an arse at times. The dam thing will work tomorrow morning! lol

No - you are not stupid as a stupid person would not ask the question.

Yes - the screen has fuses and a relay.

Any piece of kit on the car that draws a lot of current will have a switch, a fuse, and a relay.

I can't remember offhand which number the fuse is or exactly which relay - that's why I said 'handbook time'.

As well as the fuses and relays in the driver's glovebox, there are more in the box just back from the battery.

Happy hunting. :)

Checked this morning, the drivers side fuse box has no blown fuses,
the fuses and relays under the bonnet also have no blown ones, the 3 fuses in the little box to the left of the battery/main fuse box has the left/right split fuses for the screen. They are fine as well.

:confused::confused:

Any other reasons for it packing up? Would removing the wipers and checking the connections at the bottom be worth doing?

Or just replace with a new one and hope it works?

wire a lightbulb across the two terminals on one side of the screen. turn it on and see if it lights up. repeat for othe side. if it doesnt, do the same for the input side of the relay. that should tell yu where yo prob is.

lightbulb on two wires - best diagnostic tool available :D. lower the watts, the better.

Sounds like an idea, remove the wipers etc for that then.

Sounds like a job for tomorrow for my day off. :)

depends what you mean by steamed up,mine works fine in frost and normal steaming up,[also have some elements not working] but heavy steaming to the point where when you wipe it its soaking ,it will not look at it,happens to mine in the colder and wet weather, fine in morning come 5 oclock when finished work windscreen can have heavy condensation ,depending on weather, even fully working aircon takes ages to clear this, sounds like your screen is working if the lights dim and revs alter slightly
