Heated windscreen fault

Quick update. Romoved plenum cover. Just the 6 plastic (s)rivets and the bonnet seal rubber. No other clips. There is a single wire connector that originates from the fuse that is clipped into a bulkhead tab. The earth is sourced right under this by a screw connection into the body. Removed and split the connector and metered the incoming at 13.42v (engine running). Also, managed to push a needle through the live, just before the windshield, and still had same voltage.

So, it's a bit of a mystery. I cleaned and tightened and lubricated the connector and reassembled.

Now waiting for some internal mist to see if it's magically started working !

(Fat chance do I hear you all cry !)

Could be in for a stone on the windshield next :)

Will update when new info is available............ebt

I know that would seem the logical explanation, but they are manufactured with a thick conductor at the top and one at the bottom. The heating filiments then run from top to bottom.

I can easily understand vertical filaments going o/c but not the large conductors. I should have measured the earth resistance and also the resistance of the total right hand side element. Drat !

Maybe I'll do that next..........ebt

if you mesure continuity then you will know if it is gone if you do not get any then it is time to give up ,But the only thought in my mind is has it had a stone chip and been repaired because that could do the damage

I know, how stupid was that ! Fluke in hand, easy access and didn't measure the resistance...........:hurt:

Today's job...........ebt

Good news and bad news.

It's fixed but it's simply a bad connection of the earth return where the earth lead is attached to the screen element. All I could do was to literally jam a folded peace of cardboard, up under the screen, where the earth connects to the element. It has simply come loose, where it was glued/bonded.

The screen on my 04 SE has done the same thing, demisting n problem on the passenger side, nothing on the drivers side, looks like the same problem as you've had, will have to look into it at the weekend.

This thread is just the help that I needed, really hoping it's a fuse but I know I'm not that lucky...........

Mine de-mists perfect on the driver side but only a few lines appear in the mist on the passenger side. Any ideas..... I have cleaned and copper greased chassis earths and jammed wedges under the glued/bonded connections to try sort it but no to avail. Any chance at all it could be a relay?

Fixed the same problem on SWMBO 04 SE by cleaning the earth point under the plenum.

Quick and cheap (well free) fix

Good morning,

I'm a new landy owner and my 05 Freelander is experiencing this issue with the heated windscreen.

There are 2-3 small sections of filaments that work on the passenger side so I get a few lines of clearing but the drivers side does nothing at all.

I've removed the scuttle from under the windscreen by removing the wiper arms etc and taking the two pieces out and I can see the wires going to the windscreen, which are tightly adhered it seems. The fuses are both OK as well.

My question is, can you actually access the point at which the wires connect to the screen to actually see what is happening there?

I can see where they go but short of removing the windscreen I can't see how to check if the connections are corroded etc.

Been having fun with this freelander, so far there's been a new rear passenger window regulator replacement, one failed and one successful repair/replacement of the tailgate regulator, new rear wiper arm and several rear defroster tabs broken off. One wobbly wing mirror to go :)

Loving it!

Thanks for your help guys.

Cheers

PJ
