While on the subject, has any body ever pulled a st of lamps apart to paint the surrounds black like the later range rovers? just a thought

Yes I've seen described - believe it was on rangerovers.net forum - some Swede described it on his own website: Range Rover P38 Maintenance repair improvements and tips learned by experience by ownership.
It has been done before!
