The old headlight on my 2002 Face-lift D2 had collected a lot of dirt inside so I decided to swap it for a better one. When I had both lights on the bench I noticed both had three little vents on the back of them. However, one headlight had plastic and rubber caps over these vents but the other had what looked like 'U' shaped rubber pipes.

Did one type of cap supersede the other and is one better to use than the other? Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Keith, looking at the parts list item 18 is described as 'tube ventilation' then goes on to say it's a service fix presumably to help with condensation problems so it sounds like the one with the blanking caps is the early type. Which one was full of dust/dirt ?
If you look at the fog lamps (in the bumper) on the pre facelift model (mine) it has two long pipes per lamp that go up & clip in behind the h/lamps & these work a treat to stop condensation (they also have u bends at the end to stop dirt/water ingress so if dust/dirt is getting in on the lamp with the vent tubes it could be worth fitting some long pipes with u bends at the end, all the best.

Thanks @Andy Warren . I've been looking at that parts diagram a lot recently as I checking part numbers for a new cover and screws but missed the 'not illustrated' item at the bottom.

It was the one with the rubber ventilated tubes that I was replacing. They didn't stop the inside of the lens having condensation on it, and presumably they would potentially let water in if you were wading?

That's interesting. You could run them up into the top of the engine bay like the gearbox and diff breathers.
