Hi, all.

I just collected my Y reg 1.8 freelander two days ago after a head gasket replacement. I checked the expansion tank just now (only 50 miles done) and it is FULL of thick black oil (no coolant)

Is this in any way normal? Should I have the car recovered back to the garage

get it towed straight back to the garage. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE IT.

Hi, just checked it again. The expansion tank is full of COOLANT with a layer of around 5mm of oil on the top. The oil level in the engine (via the dip stick) was at minimum when the engine was cold.

So...does this change things??????

thanks for the prompt replies. This thing has cost me 700 quid already.

Was it just getting the HG sorted that cost £700?

My answer is still the same. It's possible that it's where the system hasn't been properly flushed. It's also quite possible that the HG hasn't been fitted properly. I would assume the worst and get it recovered back to the garage. As you have already paid the garage to fix the fault you shouldn't have to pay anything else.

700 quid included a skim too.

is it not safe to drive then? the garage is about 5 miles away..

cheers

personaly(being a mechanic) id bring it straight back, they done the job and it wasnt done right so must finish it.

in case the HG is gone again get it owed so they have no way out of saying you done the damage

gloucestershire (cheltenham).

Yeah, thought it was steep but it was the missus that took it. She drove into a petrol garage and it conked out there and then. Luckily (if you want to call it that). There was a mechanics garage right behind.

I'll call them tomorrow. I could use the AA to recover it. I'm sure that the garage will be okay but you know what some garages are like with regards to responsibility. The coolant looks completely clear, I did think of syringing the oil off the top to see how it goes but to be honest, I'm rubbish at anything mechanical.

I have heard that you can get some old oil residue post gasket replacement. To be honest, I just need it sorted.

You could top the coolant level right to the brim of the expansion tank and then squeeze the top hose which will cause the floating oil to spill out of the tank. Repeating this step several times would get rid of all the excess oil. Removing the bleed screw, pulling off the expansion hose or syringing etc would then drain the coolant o the correct level.

Hi, thanks for the tip. I did this and it cleared most of the oil There is still some small blobs but not more than a tablespoons worth in the whole expansion tank.
