Help advice needed

Looking to buy a defender but my heart and head are having a fight. I really love the new style 90 but am aware that at that price tag would be a bit tentative going off road in it but my heart keeps telling me to buy one.

When I look at the 200 or 300tdi with my practical cap on I think buy that plus a car for going to work in. The trouble is I don’t have much mechanical expertise and it seems like I may need it or spend loads whenever something needs fixing.

So Folks would you go Laning and off roading in a newer landy or am I being totally mad

Guess i just need someone to tell me what i allready know

totally mad....

i would do the first option, buy an older defender so you dont have to worry about knocks, paintwork, etc...
and then a car to go to work.

Whats your budget?

A new landy will be fine green-laning ...off-road expect a few scrapes, beaten panels, scratches etc..could you live with that?

If you can afford the middle ground i'd buy a 90 or a defender for 3-4 grand (more if you can) and a runabout for work..you'd have to keep both t & t'd of course.

Then you'd have best of both worlds and not worry about the landy...it WILL break down so you will have the runabout whilst you fix it...and you can tart it up with various guards, off-road tyres etc as you need them...

Oh and by the way...landy bits generally aren't expensive if you search...and don't be afraid to get stuck in, most stuff is pretty basic if you have time and tools.

Get a 200tdi.

Why not get a Disco? They are cheaper and won't re-arrange your internal body organs if you have to travel far in it.

If you really need a separate car, you can buy a smart car for £1200. Cheap tax and insurance but you might want to get the windows tinted.

If you want a depender get a depender, if you want to go off roading and worry about scratches get an older model 200/300 tdi and a car for day to day use.

Get a 200/300tdi defender and a run about. You know you'll regret it if ya don't..
When offroading etc you want to be enjoying what your doing, not worrying about scratches & scrapes.
If ya get a cheap economical runabout then it's not that expensive either.

On the plus side though it's not like there is a shortage of stuff out there to go and look at and at least it's a fun thing to do. Hunting around for a new car is almost as much fun as owning it for me. I agree though, if you really want a Defender then prolly a Rangey or a Disco won't do it for you. What ever you go for make sure you have a decent amount left over for your daily car. A few seconds flicking through this forum shows just how "interesting" LRs can be.

Get something decent for daily driving and then with a clear conscience you can happily spend what ever is left to get the most you can for your dosh. I got a P38 for £3K and I'm chuffed to bits with it. It's purely for taking off road and so I don't care if it picks up a few marks along the way. Of course since having it and taking it up to Kirton and elsewhere a few times it's not had a scratch on it. If I did that in my daily car it would look like a colander by now probably.
