I have a freelander TD4 2003 - within seconds of driving off the HDC Amber light comes on - I do not have the HDC engaged. I have also noticed that on the digital display which shows "D" for driver etc it is flashing between F & 4 and any gear change is not smooth and it doesn't appear to be staring in 1st. All just happened at once ! Any suggestions as to the problem please...

The dash displays

p = park
r = reverse
n = neutral
d = drive (forwards = auto gear selection)
4 = highest gear is 4th using auto selection
2 = highest gear is 2nd using auto selection
1 = first gear only

F4 flashing is a fault. It could be your barrel connectors have come apart. When they come apart it will bang into gear. You can also get rough gear changes when you have low oil but I don't think this will be the problem as you have F4 flashing.

the engine should only start in P or N.

Don't drive it with this fault or you could cause further damage.

The barrel connectors are located above the auto, if you look down behind the headlight, on the battery side, under the bonnet.

Have had a good look this morning and found the two barrels secure on their original clips & plates... A bit of oil on them so oil has splashed from somewhere but also due to the bad weather have been through several deep puddles and prior to this all happening a hidden pothole which front near side wheel went into so don't know if anything was damaged during that
