So - rumble at speed and a knocking (when wobbled) front prop CV joint.

I have found a supplier of the tri pod insert (with the rollers on). has anyone managed to change just this part of the front prop successfully?? Not sure what it is that wears out. Are the seats likely to be shot?

Thanks.

The joint isn't really repairable. The grooves where the yoke slides suffer the most wear.
The complete shaft will be needed;)

Thanks, joint and new boot and new UJ came to price of new front prop complete anyway ! On order - will feedback. It appears that the worn CV may have worn out the UJ too.

How's the VCU? It's unusual for the prop CV to wear at all, unless the boot split, allowing dirt to enter the joint.

VCU tests out o.k, I think the clue is a spray of grease on the transmission tunnel above the Prop CV ! Can't see a split in boot but will investigate once removed. Clearly it has run dry since the last time I polished the underseal !!! Many years ago..............

Just a feedback on the above having done the job.
It appears that it is the bearings on the '3 wheels' in the CV at the front of the prop where all the play was. I fitted a new prop and confirmed that the old one had an (invisible to the eye) split in one of the folds which probably caused the failure. The new prop fitted was about the price of the CV, boot repair kit and a UJ and as it was all balanced up ready to fit and easier - I did that. All quiet now. However, a new problem was found by too much looking around is rear diff oil seal leaks - see new thread..............
