Ive got a problem with my merc c250 5cyl diesel she starts ok ,pulls ok for a while then looses power sometimes petering out n stoppin ,wait a couple of mins ,crank her over she starts, misses a bit then settles down for a couple of miles only to do the same thing over again.fitted new fuel filter, checked the fuel is clean, the tank is breathing ok,nothing shows up on the computer diagnosis exhaust is clear. When she runs shes as sweet as a nut, silent, smooth, im absolutley stuffed and stuck,i know its not a landy but i hoped some of the gang could throw some light on the subject ,theres a lot of experience on the forum, heres hoping thanks gang dave

Could be similar to a common 300 Tdi problem, internal de-lamination of the air inlet and turbo intercooler hoses. In other words, check all the air inlet system from the manifold backwards .. including the air filter!!

I'd also check the fuel hoses are holding pressure, it could be that whilst the pump is fine from pump to injector to filter, the hoses from tank to pump might be perforated and letting air in, bit like a Disco fuel tank sender unit and the cracking that the hoses/nylon head does.

Cheers paul theres no turbo on that model,i thought about the idea with the pipes sucking air but so theres no leaks the asumption bein sucks air when pulling fuel thro but drips when standing thats my experience with the pipes bein full of diesel its a damn nusiance when u cant find the fault as you probably know, summat broke fix it ,if you cant find it , its FUSTRATING grrr ill have to look at all the flexy pipes i think if i cant find it it looks injector pump speciallists ,,,buggar,,,that sounds like money?????

most mercs have an overload protection relay, common faults are cutting out non starting and abs/fuel related faults.
Not sure on your model but on models with battery under bonnet the relay is in vicinity by bulk head. They corrode and burn out:D

It's my experience that some fuel pipes won't leak, but can still be cracked, and can let air in, it has to be worth checking.

I've had good results from using a diesel specialist, rather than a Landy, purely down to them purely dealing with diesels and diesel injection systems, might be well worth asking them to have a look, and giving an estimate, if they will?

THANKS lads i somehow knew this was gonna be expensive, wev,e had the car bout nearly 2 years apart from routine maintenance nothing. it started playing up in feb when i was in hospital changed fuel filter champion for couple of months then of we go again ho hum. In reply to fanatic the batterys in the boot however ill have a look for that relay mate ill try the haynes and ask about might even buy one and try it must be cheaper than the diesel speciallists .The damn things fine when it runs its so fustrating .its done179000 mls uses no oil ,no water does over 40 mpg its so frugal i dont bother checking it nowadays clean as a whistle tiny bit of rust on front wheelarch thats it .Paid £1800 nearly two years shanme to pay out a fortune now and spoil it,but if it has to be tough s*** thanks for the help lads cheers dave

on my 2.5 n/a defender i had summat similar...for ages i changed all sorts...turned out the fuel line from the pump was perished inside and tiny rubber bits were randomly blocking the diesel getting through...

yes - it has Failed Under Continious Test - and is likely to run away - interesting to watch as a spectator, but not if it is your own motor.

is it overfull of oil?
