Hi Ladies & Gents...
I’ve been suckered into buying my first RR Sport 3.6 V8 sat at 159,000 on a 2008 plate. I say suckered.. I actually felt like I had stolen it, Picked her up for just Shy of £4,200 on a private sale. It came with comprehensive service history and stacks of receipts for relatively major work in the past 7 years or so. Now, I picked her up cheaply because it has an issue (shocker) here is as follows:
Everything seems to be working as it should, it’s had a full A/S overhaul 18 months ago, it starts first time, both hot and cold. It’s had a reconditioned gearbox & Torque converter which is very smooth throughout the range. The bodywork and interior is relatively tidy.. now to the head scratcher..
She drives fine through the Rev & Gear change range , until about 20 minutes into your journey (I believe when the engine is fully up to temp) then if you try and put your foot down she goes, but anything after 2K revs she starts kicking back and shuddering... it feels like something kicks in, then stops, then kicks in then stops...
Ok, so the bloke I bought it from had chucked thousands at this car and couldn’t resolve it, hence selling it cheap.. He was adamant that this is fuel related, such as the injectors. However, I dropped the RR into a very reputable garage on Thursday who took it out for a drive to log the ‘engine system fault’ and then diagnosed it.. it came back with a couple of things:
Turbo Module B fault
Mass Air Flow fault
Ok, so the MAF is more than likely just a knock on from the TM fault. The garage is going to have a thorough look at this next week and try to determine whether the turbo(s) are sticking or if they spin freely.. as he’s adamant one of the turbos is sticking.
I’ve set aside a budget for turbo replacement, I know it’s costly with body off etc, so no issue if this is what it is... but my concern here is, If the the turbo is sticking, then why on earth does this only happen when the engine is hot or 20 mins into a journey? Doesn’t make sense.. they spool up and operate as they should do within that 20 minute range, so I really don’t see how a turbo can decide to ‘not play ball’ after 20 mins of driving? The turbo pipes have all been checked may I add, but this still doesn’t explain the above^
I’d like to add something that may or may not be relevant, but I was told that it was remapped to stage 1.. I’m no mechanic so please excuse me, but I don’t suppose it could be the results of a dodgy Map.. potentially set that when the RR is hot, it’s trying to produce more boost for better performance, but the cars not having it? May be wrong but I’d really appreciate any advice.
Thanks,
Steve.
