Harsh rattle/tapping

Hey all,

Had this problem ever since I changed the oil a month or so back.

When starting the engine I get a teeth clenching rattle for the first 2-3 seconds then it disappears. It doesn't sound like chains rattling more like tappers banging. Just wondering what you guys thing it could be and also what I can do to clear it.

Many things, the noise is oil starvation to the head. If it takes 2-3 seconds to get there pressure is probably low, have you checked you put in the correct weight and quantity? Old fashioned Mk1.5 Eyeball and a dipstick would be useful.

check grade and amount of oil. Also what make?
if you have used cheap oil, that could be it also...

The oil I used was 5w30. The fitter at work gave me it as its what he uses on some of the vehicles there. Do you think that this may be the problem then?

What engine or are we supposed to be psychic? If it's the BMW v8 then it could be the vanos rattling.

Sorry mr cocky oversight on my part. Yes it is the BMW V8 4.4

Have read people mentioning the vanos, just thought it was a bit coincidental that it started when I changed the oil
