Hi, i am a new member :)
I have just bought a 2000 Freelander ES TD4 manual but i am very surprised how hard it is to push the clutch, i wish i had bought an auto!!

Can anyone offer advice as to the problem?

Thanks

I am not sure if the TD4 has the same gearbox as the petrol but if so, check the clutch actuating arm as this can seize or partially seize - lubricate it were it enters the gearbox, otherwise check the slave cylinder at the gearbox.

Check the clutch fixing plate on the side of the gearbox.(Holds the clutch slave/master cylinder in place). They are renowned for stress cracking throwing everything out of alignment.:)

TD4 ain't got none of that slave bracket stuff.
Slave cylinder is a doughnut (very expensive high liability component) inside the bell housing.
Master bolted to bulkhead - slave inside bellhousing - all hydraulic - no levers etc.
Not heard of a 'heavy' one only a busted one!
Unless the clutch pedal pivot is stiff then it's probably normal?
It is a diesel and will seem heavier than a normal petrol car clutch.
