handbrake un-adjusting itself?

I've yet to look into this but wondered if anyone had had the same problem;

My handbrake lever was coming up quite high, so I adjusted it (it had new shoes, springs and adjuster not long ago). A couple of days later, I found it needed adjusting again! Stranger things have happened I suppose, so I adjusted it up again, drove about 10 miles and it's slacker than ever!!!

So, I can't help but wonder, is the cable about to snap or is the adjuster shaking itself loose?

Handbrakes don't un-adjust themselves. They are badly set up or adjusted incorrectly in the first place.

That's a very judgemental thing to say considering you don't know anything about me - as it happens I'm a qualified mechanic so you're most likely wrong. I was just "hoping" it was a common problem so I could save a bit of time finding it.

Or adjuster teeth have worn.

Common problem? No its not and it's the first time I'v heard of it, even in my days before the 28 years of RR and disco ownership with similar brakes.
Have you seen this issue elsewhere on the www?

Also what hope is there for us DIY mechanics when if we had to visit a "qualified mechanic" they can't find the issue and has to use a Forum.

Like I Said though; I've not looked yet. I asked in the hope someone could save me some time and it'd give me chance to buy the parts, if needed, before the weekend.

The adjuster in the drum doesn't have teeth it's a wedge between the shoes and tightening the 17mm (hex) bolt into that wedge forces the shoes apart. I suspect that's shaking itself loose but even to me that seems a bit far fetched.

it is a not uncommon problem ive had to fix a few you need a stc1527

Thanks, the one in it's virtually new but then, iirc, it was good old ****part.

Don't suppose you know if the bolt can be removed, dosed with threadlock and replaced without the wedge dropping into the drum? looking at the picture of the britpart version, the bolt doesn't have anything on it

bolt normally is a patch lock ,so some thread lock would do , it can be ,but even if the wedge drops out its not hard to replace

Actually, looking at the bolt in your picture, I might be able to undo it most of the way and threadlock it (what's on the one in the picture is at the hex end of it) - that'll keep me out of trouble for five minutes.

Saying that though, it might still be something else

All done and so far so good but we'll see.
