That's exactly what it was! thanks ever such a lot! Now fixed!!I would suspect here that the tooth of the ratchet pawl is broken off - seen that one before. Answer to that is a new ratchet pawl, or of you're like me a trip to the model engineering workshop a nd a new pawl made from tool steel...
You might want to get the whole thing apart before you order parts, as the spring/shaft/knob may require renewal depending on how rusty it is and how much effort you need to put into getting it apart.
