I guess this means i have an issue - my hand brake drum moves up and down about 10mm. After driving 60 miles my gearbox tunnel and middle seat was v hot. Im guessing the heat is caused by the drum rubbing on the pads, but whats causing the movement ?

Its a 110 1992 2.5 n/a mostly original.

Bearings gone and no oil is likely.
I'd agree with that. With that much movement I'm amazed that the gear teeth inside are still engaging. It may be that with all the movement the gears are in poor condition now as they'll have been transmitting the load on the very tips of their teeth. It might be worth considering an exchange unit, or finding a secondhand one off a similar vehicle.

rumbling , i have just replaced front drive shaft so i think the noise as been masked by that . I haven't driven more than 5 miles in it for 3 months so no heat issues. And i grumbling under my breath if that's what you meant. Universal joint had failed allowed movement on uj so may have shaken the bearing to death.

Not surprised. Transfer box bearings can make a fair old knock when they let go! :D
UJ may be just coincidence. See what, if any oil is in there, may well be the issue.

Sorry that's possibly the worst post ever ! i meant .....

out of interest , assuming there is no casing damage where the bearing has failed, can this be repaired in situ or do i need to drop the transfer box out to repair?

Probably take it apart and check all bearings, especially if it has run out of oil. You can check gear/spline wear at the same time.

ill be bringing my discovery1 1994 out of storage next week, ill be stripping it and refurbishing the 3.9 v8, zf gearbox ,transfer box and axle's with the intention of putting them into the 110. So i just want to keep the 110 going until it goes into my garage for its new rebuild. It does get me thinking if the transfer box is the same on the disco as the 110 e.g. both lt230t. That would just determine how good a refit i do on the transfer box, if its not compatible ill spend the minimum effort , if it is ill do a full refurbish. So my question is does any know if they are the same or did the lt230t get a upgrade to cope with the extra v8 power? are they compatible?
