I have a Defender 300tdi (1998) and am upgrading the headlights to Halogen Crystals. My question is can I put in 100w H4 bulbs and if so will I need to fit a relay? Or will it be better just to stick to the usual 55watts?

Remember the back of crystal headlamps are plastic, dumping 100W into such a small volume may melt more than the wiring.
I have crystals with good quality 55w halogens, you don't need 100w, the crystal lens are such an improvement over standard landrover sealed beams.
The 100w bulbs are probably listed off road use only and illegal, although providing they are good quality and don't make a strange shaped beam as some cheap ones do, you are unlikely to be nicked.

Stick relays in anyway, your switches and wiring will love you for it.
It helps make sure all the currents gets to the bulb instead of warming the wires.

Use Osram Nightbreakers or similar. Good output without the potential issues of high wattage bulbs. Friend bought a used motorcycle a while back and one night the headlight fried along with the wiring due to the previous owner putting in a much higher wattage bulb. Think it was around 150W!

I'm finding this very interesting as improving the light out the front is on the to do list. It was fairly low down on the list, but is rapidly going up as this looks like a very easy solution.
I've been googling and looking on HERE
Feathers, Kwakerman I'm presuming you are using 55w nighbreakers?

To be honest, I'm not sure whether or not anything above 55 or 60watts for road use is legal or not, I'd venture to say that the regulations need to have more light thrown on them. But I will say that if the legal limit is at 55watts, why risk a prosecution, or another reason for MoT failure.
With regards to the heat generated by the bulb, the headlight unit will have been designed to withstand a certain maximum temperature while the vehicle is stationary, uprating the bulb is going to increase the temperatures involved, possibly above the melting point of some of the parts.
Regarding the current being drawn by the headlights, 55watt bulbs will draw 4.6 amps each so the wiring and switching will have been designed to safely handle the currect [just on economic grounds] being drawn by the two headlights. This is also the reason why relays should be used when installing any more lights.
The only way to increase light output is to choose the right bulb for the job and bulb manufacturers have been putting in a lot of effort to find a way to improve their lights. The results are devices like the Osram Nightbreakers ( my personal choice) and the Phillips X-Treme +130% bulbs.

I've got these fitted and they are 55W and legal.

Fitted Nightbreakers in H4 (60/55W) size to wife's Jimny several years ago and they are still going strong and she drives with her lights on all the time as folk used to pull out on her quite regularly until she started using her lights in daytime. So they've had a fair bit of use, the extra light was obvious and the light pattern is good and doesn't dazzle oncoming traffic.
The Disco has them fitted in all the front lights but I've not been out in the dark to see any improvement yet.
Like many important safety related items, always better to fork out for a good brand as it'll give better results and work and fit properly.

Cheers, Feathers. I'm coming up with H4 fittings for my Defender when I use the product search for my vehicle. Are the H7's for your Discovery?

I've got a facelift D2 which takes H7 in the headlights. However, be careful when looking online for bulb types. One gave my fogs as H7 but they are H11. Had exactly the same issue when getting new bulbs online (and when looking in the instore catalogue in Halfords which I complained about but with no interest from them) for my Jag the bulbs listed for the fogs was incorrect. Best taking one out to look at.

Ok, cheers.
I've done the search on two different bulb selling websites and they both came up with H4's. I'll do a bit more research before I buy. Thanks for the info.

for @Al2O3
The twin filament main/dip headlight bulbs for the 'fender and earlier Discos are H4.
The H7 are a single filament bulbs for the facelift Disco 2. The H11 are for the fog lights built into the Disco 2 bumper. Aftermarket spot lights often take a H3 bulb.
Cheers, Brian. :)
