Hi, I’m new to the forum and to Land Rovers. I’ve recently bought a Freelander 2 and the fun has already begun!
(Sorry if this has been covered multiple times before)
When driving under 30mph I can hear a humming noise from the rear of the car. I removed the fuse for the Haldex and the noise appeared to stop.
1) Does this definitely point to a problem with the Haldex or could it also be a rear diff problem?
2) If it is the Haldex, does the whole unit need replacing or could a full Haldex service cure the issue if caught early enough?

What year is it?

Up to about 2010 the rear diffs were made of cheese, I would imagine most have been replaced/reconditioned by now. Later ones were a stronger.

If there's no history of a Haldex service, then it is advisable to do one - it sounds like they really do benefit from it - or rather the whole transmission benefits from it!

Have a search around on here, there are quite a few threads about it and info on servicing. They talk about videos on YouTube if you're interestred in doing it for yourself. I think the videos are usually for Volvos but the Haldex is a common component. Check which version of the Haldex you have to - it changes with the model year of the F2.

These guys are pretty well respected transmission specialists for F1 & F2. They also have a general info page about transmission faults...

I had similar issues last year, I did a haldex service but noise became worse, I had my diff rebuild and it was fine.
The haldex service is one of those things which people get scared of but in reality its pretty simple, you can get kits on ebay or buy the stuff from volvo as mentioned above they use the same unit.
It's worth a shot doing the service if you are confident, it doesn't cost a fortune.
If its the diff then it will probably make itself known soon, mine deteriorated very quickly and became very noisy, so I took it off and had it rebuild, by a company near york, Bell engineering get good reviews for their work, but cost quite a bit more than I paid.
One thing I also did was drill the diff and fit a magnetic plug in the bottom so that I can drain the diff oil, dont understand why LR didn't do this when they built the vehicle.

Thanks for the help!
It’s a 60 plate so 2010 but I guess even the upgraded diffs can fail if not maintained.
After a bit of reading it does sound like it’s the diff so I’ll have to give Bell a ring and get it booked in! Looks like that’s over £700 to spend already haha!
I’m open to doing the Haldex service myself anyway so once I’m sorted with the diff that’ll be next on the list :)

Mine is 2010 and had only done about 28k miles, but apparently it's a design issue.
I paid about £300 to have mine rebuilt but it's a bit more of a job to take it out and put it back, which I did myself.
The haldex is easy BUT check which one you have and get the correct filter, and carefully read the instructions on te filling it with oil.
If you really feel it's the diff may be as well to wait as the haldex has to come out when the diff is repaired.

If you recondition the diff and install it with a Haldex that needs a service, its going to take a pounding from day 1.
