Grrr....mad it worse

I had a squeak, when the engine was on tickover on my 98 disco 1, i then decided to do the fan belt tensioner bearing, as this seemed like a likely culprit, i did the bearing change, which went ok, however, the drift i used slipped when in the vice :doh: and i thought i had buggered the bearing, but i checked it when it was back in the temsioner wheel, and it didn't feel tight or gritty.

put the new belt on, and got no noise, until the school run this morning, it started again, then got worse throughout the day, now the noise stays even in top gear on the dual carriageway, it's driving me nuts, and SWMBO has already started calling it a money pit, however i quite like it, it has character, but...it would be good when you fix something you have a few miles motoring whithout something else breaking...:D

although the bearing feels smooth, could i have damaged the internals ?

or is it the new belt, or could it be a pully making the noise, it's quite audiable now, it wasn't that bad before i touched it...lol

i was going to take the wheel off again tomorrow and check for play, if i damaged it, there should be a nice bit there after a dfay of running around

did mine the other day same problem with squel with new bearing in problem is once the original bearing is worn the spring in the tensioner is worn, i now 99% of people on hear will diss agree with me on this but bite the bullet and buy the whole tensioner kit got mine for like 70 quid and now shes as quite as the day she left the factory :D

Mine has the same problem but its the crankshaft pulley. Some prat hammered it when doing the timing belt and its buckled. Might be worth checking its not all bashed at one side eh.
 
i'm really surprised someone hasn't been selling a shim (same thickness as penny) on ebay yet that magically cures the problem, thanks guys will give it a go, can't be any worse than what it is, after the looks i've had today, anything is worth a go, will check the pulleys tomorrow too
 
I bought a new tensioner which solved the problem but within 6 months the problem returned. I was about to buy another tensioner when I found out about the penny trick - problem solved and still no noise after 12 months.

on e-bay landrover shim for belt tensioner, same thickness as a penny yours for only £2.99+p+p:confused::confused::confused:

i might have one of those shim kits knocking about somewhere :rolleyes:

what i was trying to explain is that people will buy anything, rather than sticking a penny in the belt tensioner, if it looks shiny, and claims to fix it they will buy it...the penny (excuse the pun) did drop some time ago, i just thought you would have known what i was trying to imply

anyone interested in a bulk deal on these new shims - I can do them for £1.50 each if you buy a 1000, free postage on bulk purchases
 
Well it was just as bad as ever this morning so, decided that i have had enough, and did the penny trick...can't believe it...it worked like a charm, but it did make SWMBO smile, then laugh...she said it was the cheapest thing i have done to it yet, and thought at the start i was bull****ting her about the penny :D
