Just started in our TD4 MY01 -

Lower wishbones and track rods have been replaced recently but been fine since.

At low speeds when driving forward with full lock in either direction there's a ghastly grinding noise.

When I was under it doing the wishbones the IRD looked a bit mucky and there was a tiny bit of rubber pushing out of the seal between the casing.

Sound sounds like it is coming from front and centre so is IRD the chief suspect? If it had lost some fluid would it be silient unless turning?

Suggestions welcome -supposed to be driving to wales on Friday!!

thanks!
Andy

When was the IRD oil level last checked or changed? It's supposed to be changed at 70K miles intervals.
Are all the tyres identical with the least worn on the rear?

Thanks for the reply -
Never AFAIK. One of those not on the service item list but should be done periodically things?

I’ll try that first. Are the drain /fill plugs accessible without removing a ton of stuff?

The IRD oil is in the service schedule. Use a fully synthetic 75w90 only as it's a well stressed item.
The fill is on the rear to the right of the prop output. The drain is on the bottom, so the rear of the bash guard needs dropping down. Make sure you open the fill before the drain. The plugs are made of cheese, so only use a good fitting 6 sided socket. ;)

How are the tyres? Are they all identical with least worn on the rear?

Got this sorted last week.

It looks like it's been weeping oil v slowly for a while - not sure if there's anything to do about this without taking the whole unit out for refurb/seal and sounds expensive/maybe unnecessary.

I went to remove fil plug first (obvs) and my heart sank when I saw this:

but one tight fitting 6 point socket later and it released on first go! :):):)
Dodged a bullet I think.
Fill plug replaced with new bolt and washer. I can't believe what a mess the old one was.

The evil black issue of satan that drained out when drain plug removed definitely looked past its sell-by and less than 1.1litres. Refilled with golden 75w90 and has been fine since!

Thanks for the help guys!

ah you probably mean on the subframe - the rest of it is not that bad - it'll last out the car I think ;)
