Green M & S lights flashing

My '03 TD5 auto has the manual and sports flashing light problem, did a bit digging on the net and I had the battery and alternator checked and both ok, put it on test book and it has a intermittent fault on " solenoide one to ground or open circuit ". As I was just at an auto electrician he was by no means a land rover expert and as such couldnt give me any more help. Anyone had similar or any auto box experts help on this one. I also had the three amigo's problem, so any more flashing lights I will be able to put it on the front at Blackpool.

You can waste a lot of time looking at every thing else but in the end it will turn out to be the X Y switch on the side of the gearbox needs replacing. It simply is worn out.
My 03 Auto M&S lights came and went for months and I check or changed anything that every body else mentioned! The part from the LR dealer costs about £120 retail but trade costs vary and I found out later I could have got 30% doh! Still job done and no more flashing M&S. Easy to do yourself.

I have the very same problem, where exactly is this xy switch and what does it look like? cheers

Looking from underneath the car it is on the near side of the auto box (black plastic with cable visible). The auto gear selector cable attaches to the unit by a 10mm nut. Once you see the unit the logic of how it works is apparent. The bolts mounting the switch are not the easiest to get to especially the top one. When I removed mine the gearbox was left in park so I had a reference point when reassembled. It is time consuming to set up as there is not much room to make adjustments but it does pay off in the end. Also wrap the connector in a poly bag to stop the AC draining into the electrics, good design that! Oh and the exhaust is in the way as well. Have fun!

"Solenoid one" is one of the gear shift solenoids in your auto box.

However, the XY switch can give all sorts of 'funny errors' so is perhaps worth changing first.

Just a follow up on this problem, changed the xyz switch and so far no more flashing lights, fingers crossed. It's not fun driving when you got no confidence in your car, specially when hols are coming up.

Iv just been struck with the very same issue, going to pick up an xy switch later and hopefully if i get the time install it, i will keep you posted!!

there could be around 15 reasons for those flashing lights... are you sure you want to play in blind on this?... you better make sure what's wrong first... that means tester

Hi I'm reading about the dreaded M+S lights I too have this problem !I've currently had a new battery xyz switch gearbox flush and new filters ! And today the lights came back on !! Any more ideas please ? Karl1

£360 is taking the pee!!!!!!!!

So is £150 for a SH one!

I don't fully understand why, but in approx 2010 this part went from approx £120 to £350 !!!! Absolute daylight robbery.

Some peeps on this forum have had success renovating their existing switch - got to be worth a try at that price !!!!!!

Manual gearboxes - aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Just an update, i took my xyz inhibitor switch off and emptied a can of electrical contact cleaner through it, allowed it to dry out, sealed it with sikaflex, relocated the drain pipe for the air con using some festo fittings so it wasnt draining directly into the xy switch, put it all back together, plugged in my modis ultra (diagnostic tool) cleared the codes and voila!!!
Shes working the very best and has been for quite a few months now touch wood!!
This quick fix repair was very awkward and quite time consuming but it saved me a handful of notes so im happy enough.

I removed my switch a few weeks back, disassembled it, cleaned it, resealed and replaced it, and it's been perfect. Don't waste money on a new switch until you've tried this. There are several threads on the net where others have had success just by cleaning and resealing the switch. Cost me nothing but a bit of time to do it. 400 quid odd for a new one is a complete joke! Must cost just a few pounds to make.
