I have a 1999 4.6 HSE Vouge with a factory fitted GPS system, being 12 years old it's not really anything like the portable units available today (at good prices).

I'm really quite sure it would be a better idea to fit one of these new (portable) units rather than to try and update the original software and data, what do you think?

You're probably right to consider a stand-alone portable unit.

However, you could always update your entire entertainment system with a double DIN touchsceen unit, which would incorporate Radio, DVD, CD, SD Card, Digital TV, Rear Camera, Aux Video, MP3 and Satnav.

I did this with my 2002 4.4HSE, which was fitted with the factory radio/cd system.

Sounds like one hell of a system, but as I have a few different vehicles I would not know which was the best one to put such an item in (couldn't fit one to each, too much). To choose one would be so hard Luv 'em all

Jaguar 5.3 HSE S type Cabriolet
Toyota Supra 3L Twin Turbo

plus a Kia 1OPicanto for a run around (va voom)
