may not be a definate decision but if the landy isnt working by next week im considering selling her :( shes been off the road now for 4 weeks roughly, with a broken distributor, ive got a new one fitted it and still nothing, fixed the heating problem the thermostat was stuck open. im on the job of takin out the dizzy and turning it slightly and fitting it again hoping its just fractions out, but my pacients is wearing down, went out the other morning and some little c***s had broken into it and tried taking it smashing the steering colums breaking the ignition and taking all my locks out all of which have been fixed.
If i was to sell how much should i ask and would i get more breaking her down.
its a 92 k reg disco 3.5 v8i i paid £995 in december 2009 for her, since then shes had new thermostat, distributor, silicone hoses replacing the cooling pipe and the long one under the cooling pipe lol dont know the name. at the min she wont start, she makes all the noises but just wont fire up, sparks and everything else electrial has been checked by a crypton tuning guy.

Unfortunately mate, I would say that if you sell her, you'll prbably only get about £500.

I'm saying this of course without seeing the vehicle, but 1992 Discos are getting very leggy now and with it being a V8 as well I reckon you are going to struggle.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, if you need a Disco you would probably be beter fixing and keeping her.

they are not that hard to make run,how many miles and where are you?
I may be either able to get it running or interested in it if you want shot of it.

im In Barnsley South Yorks i knew i wouldnt get the price i paid for her, id love to get her running again, its just starting to really get me down that no matter how hard im trying i carnt get her going and carnt afford garage prices to get them to fix it, so relying on friends to help with mechanical knowledge just dont know anyone with v8 knowledge and relying on my haynes manual lol

did it run well before the current issues ? - how many miles and how much are you expecting for it ?

Why did you change the distributor in the first place?

Are you just putting the new one in anyhow and hoping for the best?

Have you got the plug leads on in the right order?

If you can answer these I can come up with a few more and maybe we can get you going :)

Milage is 145245

Car started up and then cut out then wouldnt start up again about 4 weeks ago, Fuel was going through all sparks were working so called out a crypton tuning guy he tested it all and said the distributor wasnt working the cap was it was the distributor itself. Bought a brand new distributor left old cap on still couldnt get it fired so put new cap on it, as far as im aware they are on in the right order as i put them back on how i took them off the old cap, ive been told it could be that the distributor is in the wrong way but i marked it in 10 diff places and put it in the exact same place, i havetried moveding it sligtly to see if it was a fraction out and nothing.
everything starts turning over and every now and then it will make the noise of the engine started but only for a second .

Did you mark the centre spindle of the distributor and realign that?

Are the points set?

Fairly simple questions I know but always rule out the easy things first :)

Plenty of fuel in the tank?

Charge the battery, get someone to turn it over on the starter motor while you twist the dizzy round, you'll hear the difference and find the spot where it fires up, once its running you can fine tune it with a strobe.

is there any reason why i have to drain the system befor ei take dizzy out? i wouldnt have thought it would effect it
Paul can i do that with the system darained or full?

Just going on the instructions it says in the haynes manual, i had to drain it anyhows to put in the new thermostat, thats made life easier not having to drain that everytime i want to turn it then.
thanks

Right make sure you are not 180 degrees out-if need be whip off a rocker cover and watch inlet on number 1 close as top dead centre mark comes up on crank pulley.

Set at 10 degrees before top dead centre, look at rave but number one about 4pm. then make sure rotor arm in correct place as you slot in distributor.

fit leads and loosely fit clamp-scratch a mark as a reference, crank engine and slowly try turning distributor till it fires. time up with strobe.

You don't need to drain either the cooling system or the oil, to fit a distributor. You don't need to remove it to turn/adjust it.
