My wife's TD4 (not the one that has had the new engine!) is a 2002 with 90k on the clock has become lazy to start when cold. Never seen the glow plug light come on with this vehicle, however, mine comes on for a few seconds even today.
Have checked feeds and the glow plugs get power after a start up (which is fine) - not been able to check feed on a first start of the day yet.
My question is this; Rave suggests that the ECM gets information back from the glow plug relay and this is used by the ECM to control the glow plug lamp. Further investigation shows that there is an input on the ECM connector C0606 (pin 52) labelled "Fault Status Glow Plug Relay - Input". I have trawled circuits and cannot find where this gets its feed from. Will be fitting a new set of plugs, but this still doesn't explain why the lamp is not coming on - does anyone please know how the ECM gets its feedback from the glow plugs, how it decides to light the lamp and where this feed comes from? The lamp is an LED on the instrument panel - not easy to test or change.
