I wasn't agreeing with the site generally :)
Its just the only place I know online where there is some sort of
calculation as to the pollution building a car causes.
I was only trying to justify the landie :)
I reckon I get 9mpg generally (usually rarely in top and up and down
tracks with a trialer on) 17mpg on the road :)

Very neo-Malthusian. Its growth figures assume that everyone will one
day be able to drive two cars simultaneously. Like in the UK, Greenpeace
et al proclaim that there is no limit to the number of cars on our roads
- of course there is, drivers. Discount those under 17 for a start
(apart from chavs) , discount those who can't drive, and all those Green
peace members who won't drive, and the maxiumum HAS to be less than the
UK population.

I'm not too keen on the "allowed" there. This isn't Soviet Russia (yet).

Oh yes, a wild Clarksonian exaggeration as we have come to expect, but the
point was he was able to do it - BUY a car, legally drive it there, and
still be cheaper than the standard rail fare.

The only reason I can see for going anywhere at all by train is to visit
London. Once a decade seems to do me.

Mind you, I can think of several on this group alone who would drive two (or
even more) Land Rovers simultaneously if they could find a way.

Me, for example.

You need to see my girlfriend, than. She's the local agent for Zetor.

Standard rail fare is a reality for many people. When I go to London
(as infrequently as possible, but several times per year) it's usually
for a meeting of half a dozen people, all with fluid diaries. I'm
lucky if I can buy the tickets 24 hours in advance, let alone a week.
And I travel first class usually so I can work, because otherwise it's
5 hours lost productivity.

I'd have to check, but I think Wakefield - Kings Cross last time was
about £200. I fly to Ireland and mainland Europe for less (and often
faster).

Trains are great, because I can work and justify having the mobile
off. But for most journeys I do they are vastly impractical and too
slow - it takes almost about 40 minutes for me to drive to a mainline
station, against 3 minutes to drive to an M1 junction.

coo, good stuff.

greenpeace come over as incredibly biased. I notice no mention of the other
"pointless" 4x4s: Hummer, Ford Explorer, Toyota Land cruiser Amazon, VW
toerag, Porshce Cayenne, BMW X5 and X3, all of which are doubtless equally
bad for the environment.

Also misinformation abounding... 12 mpg from range rovers. Possibly, if you
drive like a ****. ditto "25 mpg" for diesel ones. Our diesel 300 TDi
disco returns about 32 average, better on a run. Neil himself claims 18 mpg
from his RR, which is 50% better than Greenpeace's claims.

Trouble is, you can't argue with 'em 'cos they refuse to listen, and just
repeat the same old mantra about "carbon monoxide" which is bollocks - all
cars after 1993 have cats, and the whole point of that expensive technology
is to STOP it emitting bloody CO - so the CO argument is as fatuous as most
of the others. OK, they do put out more *CO2* than a ford fiesta. But so
do jags, so do ford scorpios, so do large BMWs and mercs, so do bloody great
volvo estates...

Someone should REALLY also mention the MPVs. How many MPV owners regularly
use all 7 seats? How many *ever* do so? Don't see any cries for them to
all buy a small runabout.

Martyn, I downloaded this, and I'm getting the sound OK, but the video is
just a green screen with purple lines moving across it. I'm using Windows
Media Player 10. Same with Real Player v10. What's wrong, and any way
round this?

BTW, I'm sure it would be more interesting if she invested in an indecent
bra. (OK, Karen, I'll get me coat...)

Course, back in the old days, when I had an office in Amsterdam and
there were flights from Sheffield airport, I could be at a meeting in
the RAI (Amsterdam Conference Centre) quicker than I could be in a
meeting in Leeds City Centre - erm, and for a few quid less, too...

Never _ever_ do London meetings these days - if it's _that_ important
then _they_ can come to Poggle Wood and meet Max...

Slightly disappointed really that they didn't film it in mid winter.

Looks like we're all wearing coats - odd that...

Do I detect a little Venus envy growing within this NG?

Oh, the power of the bra :)
Makes the discomfort of wearing an indecent one worthwhile ;)

I can remember contacting my boss in Montreal in the morning, flying there and
seeing him before the close of play that day. Scary!! Specially cos I can't now
figure out how!

do they use Zetors in Russia? I'd expect there to be some sort of moskvitch
or sometihng. or something called ZIT or somesuch.

*I* still want one of them 6x6 ZILs, if that's what they were.
