Hi all,
Im looking for some LR wisdom.
I currently have a Disco 200Tdi...Love it soooo much, its me beastie:cool: .
BUT im looking to upgrade soon to a Range Rover something like a 1998. Id like the 4.6 gas converted but then again ive had loadsa luck running my 200tdi on veggie oil...so im torn between gas converting a V8 and running a 2.5 Range Rover diesel on veggie oil.
I don’t want to end up with the wrong Rangey and have a money pit!
So really it which RR to avoid?
Cheers.
Jay

Hi Jay, Matter of personal preference really but when chnged from my RR Clasic to a P38 I found there was a masive amount of difference in trim & power between the TDi & V8. The oil burner even had manual seats. Did think about the gas conversion but didn't want to lose the boot space & have hassle with the insurance co. or pay the £1200 really. I think it just depends how many toys you want on your RR. If you go for the V8 go for the later model with the Bosch fuel injection system, c1999 if you can. Trev

Hi Trev,
Yes to toys...I want as many toys as I can fit in. Cruise, Ac, all that.
I also like the sound of the adjustable air suspention, that sounds cool. I plan to turn it into a RR version of my disco ie big knobbly tyres to lift it a bit, snorkel. ive already got all that screens/PS2/DVD lot for my Disco so that will all go across.
As for the power plant im going off LPG more every day, I cant be bothered stopping at the petrol station to fill up the gas all the time. So im leaning towards the Tdi more and more I just hope its as pokey as mine. im looking around this afternoon for one on a forecourt for a test drive. As long as its no slower i can cope with the Tdi i recon;)
Now I just have to find the diesel model that has all the toys.

Morning Trev

I had my eye on a late p38 2.5 diesel for about 6 months
I wanted a late p38 as a lot of the quality & build issues seem to have been resolved.

i would have gon for a slightly later 2002-03 but the difference in price & insurance was really prohibative!

Anyways the diesel - yep I know the BMW unit is gutless so i budgeted into my Exp getting the intercooler enlarged and a re-mapped (up-rated) chip

this I had done on and the difference is simply putting it asounding!

the BHP is raised from about 136 to close on 200bhp! and more importantly the engine breaths easier and run with much more economy.

Futhermore as the power is much nearer that of a 4.0 the match between the auto box and moter is that much better and results in much better (smooter) gear changes etc

Yep you could go the way of a 4.0 & gas but as has been pointed out you have to comprimise witn tanks etc.

With regard to trim finishes having tested the HSE & DSE models the finish it seems is identical.

Finally the usual applies, aim to source yourself a vehicle with
as low as milage as possible (on the orig motor)
More important a full service history
if possible one that hasnt had a tow hook attached!

for me at the time it was a toss up between a p38 diesel or a merc
M class the standard equipment on the RR were much better as standard and as mentioned the motor could be tuned-up at relativly low exp.

PS if youre wanting a growl on your RR you find a Up-graded Dieselhas the growl (if not the purr!)

happy trails

Abe
