We are new owners of a 2001 Freelander ES and are replacing things as and when. My question is: there is a small box on the front diff which allows the four wheels to work independently OR go the same way - what is it called or are we having our legs pulled? All contributions gratefully received

I don't fully understand your question.
But I would have thought it is the diffs themselves, and the VCU in the middle, that allow the four wheels to work independently or go the same way.
Maybe Hippo will know what the box you are describing is. But it would probably help him, and the others, if you could post a pic of what you are looking at. :)

What's the problem with the 4WD? There is an IRD ( Intermediate Reduction Drive) that contains the front diff and sends power down the prop shafts to the rear. The VCU (Viscous Coupling Unit) controls how much power is sent to the rear diff.

I think he’s talking about the IRD too...

Yeah but no but yeah....

The IRD doesn't allow the wheels to be driven independently though. The diffs and VCU do that.

It ...erm....reduces the drive to the rear prop. It can't NOT drive the rear prop.

The VCU can transfer that drive or not to the rear diff.

The Freelander 1 doesn’t have a front diff that you can see, not like a Defender. The VCU is too far back and you’d have to be p1ssed to call that a box. It’s a cylinder, if anything.

By elimination, I’m going for IRD - loosely, a transfer box.

Oi @Hippo your knowledge of all things hippo related are required :D
I would have hoped by now yer would have quite a bit of knowledge ont Freelander's and be able to answer this yerself with yer reading all me posts. :p

The main components of the Freelander 1 transmission are: (rough physical layout)
