I fitted some General Grabber ATs to my Freelander 2 in 235 60r 18 and I am experiencing some very strange resonance type of sounds particularly at around 55-60 mph?
Previously I had Pirelli Scorpion Zero's fitted and they were very quiet so I'm disappointed in the Generals when everyone else seems to think they no different to the OE tyres in terms of tyre noise.
Has anyone else experienced this? Perhaps something else has gone wrong with my car like a wheel bearing, diff or gearbox problem?!
Seems strange that the noise has only been since I changed tyres and the car has only covered 18k miles?
Any ideas what might be wrong?

I've just fitted them to mine, I'm getting a bit of noise. It doesn't sound like a bearing though, that's more of a whine. It might be worth getting the bearings checked but I think it will just be tyre noise. Have you ever fitted AT tyres before? You may be noticing it more because it's a new noise.

Thanks Duncp73,

I've not fitted AT's before but I did quite a bit of research online before I purchased.
Yes the noise is like a whine but I would normally associate that noise with a bearing noise, people tend to describe tyre noise in terms of a drone particularly on motorways? Curiously at 75/80 mph they seem quiet?
What are yours fitted to are you running 18's or 17's maybe the noise is worse the lower the profile tyre? Mine are 18's. I cant help thinking such a hard compound doesn't help either but I'm no expert?

I'm on 17s. It could just be you're not used to the noise. It may well be worth getting the bearings checked out though. You wouldn't be the 1st person to find a knacked bearing after fitting new tyres.

What are you thinking Hippo?
I'm thinking about putting me carpets and front seats back in in time for the formula 1. Perhaps not enough time so I'll watch it online on bbc1. Also want to finish editing another video on hippo's today but need to do some other stuff too.

I'm wondering if this is a noise you can hear inside but not outside. Or if you get a better understanding of the type of noise and possibly its location from outside the vehicle if someone were to drive past you. Resonant noises can travel and do strange things.

When I was looking for my squeal I made my own rolling road with ma HippoRamps (TM). You don't get the same load pressures so noises are different and the engine won't get the required wind flow to cool it but you have the opportunity to eggsperiment a bit. When driving back from a FL2 rockingham castle free 1/2 day driving eggperience I realised just how bad my GG AT2's (original type) were at speed. I felt the difference when they were fitted but realised they needed to go after the speed comparison, so I got some Pirelli Scorpions instead. Horrendous road noise went. Top end power increased suddenly and the snap steering action when driving through 1 inch think water on roads disappeared. Also noticed the AT2's warm up the vcu quicker so they must cause it to activate more often.

My GG AT3s were very quiet IMO but I was comparing them to previous GGat2s and KL71 Kumhos... I also had 16" 75 profiles. Could make a difference.

Thanks for all your replies,
Right in an attempt to get to the bottom of this I have changed wheels back to the OE wheels & tyres.
Very quiet to drive not much tyre noise; no transmission whine but still and strange resonance at about 55-60 mph?
It sounds like something has come loose and is knocking on the baulkhead but not really loud just a faint knocking sound (I think we can rule out engine mounts!).
Lifted the bonnet with the engine running and I can detect a faint knock from the top LHS rear of the engine. There's a black plastic casing on the grooved belt end at the top of the engine but I don't know what this is. Any ideas? I'm not too sure when it comes to diesel engines maybe its something to do with emissions?
Any further thoughts guys?
cheers

I don't know mine is a Freelander 2 TD4 XS on a 12 plate so I would have thought that would have been sorted by last year?
