Hi,

I have 33" tyres on my Disco now, I know they aren't huge but at some point i'd like to do something about the gearing.

I'm not very good with gear ratios and such, so I'm seeking some advise from you guys.

I feel it would be easier to change the gearing in the diffs, rather than the transfer box - would you agree this is the easiest option of the 2?

Also I understand if i change the transfer box, for one from a Defender for example, it will only make a difference in high range? Is that correct?

I have a early (94) 300tdi manual Disco - what are the standard ratios in both the transfer box and diffs?

What ratios should I be looking at to correct the gearing after fitting 33"s? I don't mind losing some top end, as I don't go very fast in the Disco - not built for that!

Thanks all.

Answers to all your questions are easily found using Google.

If you are happy to spend the money. Slap some 4.10:1 or as close as diffs in it. These are non standard and will cost.

If you doing proper off roading you may want to consider upgrading the diff centres while you are at it. ATB, locker or even just 4 pin.

If you think you'll go bigger tyres again then you might want to consider more like a 4.7:1 diff. But don't go for Series diffs as they are really weak. If you are going bigger tyres again, then fully upgrading the axles is likely in order.

Such short diff gearing will mean it'll be useless if you go back to small tyres. Although 4.10:1 you'd get away with it.
